My dad doesnt think this is as hopeless as I do. Which is odd because my dad has never once felt that way about any of my relationships or my ssisters' relationships. My dad is pretty good at reading people and situations logically.

Honestly I think you both need to step back, regardless of what the future may hold. Your kids don't deserve the yo-yo'ing of some guy coming in and out of their lives. Wait until he is stable before bringing him around your kids again.
