When I go back to see the psychiatrist in a couple of weeks he is, I think, going to put me on new meds: Olanzapine. I am already on some heavy duty meds for my BP, is this a common med for PTSD? will I end up walking around totally gaga??

I sat in peace on Sunday, on the sofa, and then unfortunatly had a complete flashback of the incident, it made me cry so much :(

I hope someone has some advice on the meds. I haven't tried any thus far and just taking Valerian Root helps me fall asleep better....

But I did want to say... I feel so out of control with the flashbacks at times. Your description of you sitting in peace and then a complete flashback.... This scares me. I have only had bits and pieces and appear unready to allow them out. I was so hoping once I have a complete one, if I should... that it would start to desensitize me and maybe I'll gain some control?! I live in fear of complete rememberance at times but try to take comfort in the fact most say unless you are ready, your brain won't allow it??! I'm confused.

I'm on a different atypical antipsychotic, Geodon. To be honest with you, its the best med I have found to treat my anxiety associated with PTSD. Of course, not all antipsychotics are the same, but I'd give it a try at the very least.

I've taken Geodon before...great benefits but eventually the side effects became too severe and I'll NEVER go on that again. I've taken Abilify, side effects weren't as bad as with Geodon but still more than I was willing to accept. I've taken Zyprexa (olanzapine) but it wasn't as effective for me. I take Risperdal sometimes. I really dislike being on an antipsychotic but there are times, like right now, when I need it. I refuse to stay on it long term, though. I use it for a few months until I get through whatever difficult period I'm having and then my doc helps me get back off of it.

I guess the answer to your questions is that it is not uncommon for this type of medication to be used.

I've also just learned today about a new atypical antipsychotic called Saphris. According to my doc it shows great promise with far fewer side effects than other similar drugs currently being used. I haven't had a chance yet to do any research of my own.
