Mirtazapine And Venlafaxine (californian Rocket Fuel)

When I was in hospital last month I was put on Mirtazapine 30mg (Remeron) and whilst I'm mostly stable, I'm always very down and even if not actively trying to kill myself like before, I feel passively suicidal and spend long periods of time desperate to find escape and a way out of life. I'm scared that it is doing something to help and I still feel this bad all the time and if I come off of it I may be a worse somehow and danger to myself again. One thing that is noticeable is that though I have way worse trouble falling asleep, I have substantially fewer nightmares and don't wake up so many times a night.

Venlafaxine (Effexor) is on my list of other meds to try but it can take a long time (8-12 Weeks) to start working - I don't want to be medless for that long, especially if at the end of it, I find out it doesn't work anyway. The advantages are that the two can be combined so if/when it works I can taper off the mirtazapine or just keep both - because nothing I've taken has worked yet and I'm beginning to think nothing ever will, it would be lovely if it did! That's the other plus the combination of the two has been used to effectively treat treatment resistant depression.

Has anyone had any experience with the two together? Please share! Thanks in advance.

@Kas_Can_Fly I too am on Mirtazapine but with out the Effexor mixed in. I apart from having the suicidal thoughts have reacted similar to yourself. I take a while to "wind down" and have to take my pills approx 2 hours before I even try to go to sleep. Again I wake less and have better more regulated sleep as a result. I have been on these for approx 2 months now and they I feel that like Effexor they take a while to kick in properly.

They are the first meds to actually work for me and I was very tenuous and doubtful that they would work as I had had my meds changed 5 times in 2 months prior to these.

I have had a bad experience with mirtazapine it made me see things and other scary stuff. Yet a friend if mine is on it and has been for over a year and swears by it. Her mood is so much better she seems to be doing really well.

So what I'm getting at is that everyone is different what works for someone won't necessarily work fir everyone.

Hang in there with most anti depressants they tend to make you feel worse before you feel better.

Thanks everyone! I know I am a little better, but still never being able to do anything and being overwhelmed by everything and constantly feeling desperate for a solution out of life is not great and I want more, I'm happy that I'm not actively suicidal, but beyond that there's no relief and I need and want some. From the other side I definitely don't want to be worse hence not wanting to ditch the Mirtazapine, but adding to it. I'm seeing a psychiatrist in the next few weeks or so, however I'm used to researching my meds and going in with a good understanding but at the end of the day I'm going to have to trust the decisions of someone I've never met before and even though my Social Worker will be there it feels like a lot and I'm worried.
