New Here
I have been married to a man with PTSD for 7 years. He was the victim of an alcoholic father who many times woke him from sleep (while in a blackout) to beat him for something that he may or may not have done. This was when he was 8 years old!

I love my husband very much, but it is so hard when he wakes from sleep with a jolt and treats me as though I am going to beat him! I accidently bumped his foot (which was on my side of the bed) and he woke up yelling, "You kicked me!" He stayed upset and angry for the whole weekend! Just when I think things are really getting better, it starts all over again.

It is so stressful that I find myself defending myself rather that trying to de-escalate the situation. He has never hit me or done anything to hurt me physically. He just shuts down and "goes away".

He is the direct opposite of his normal loving self.

Hello DJD,
Welcome! I'm sorry you are going through a tough time. Is your husband seeking treatment for his PTSD at this time? It is very important he seeks treatment to better manage his PTSD.

Come on over to the supporters section - ask questions, read the sticky's at the top of each section and even start a personal diary. And take care of yourself!

And therefore, well worth your time to work on the situation, DJD. Obviously, you already know that after 7 years! My wife and I maintain separate bedrooms for a number of reasons. That's one possibility. Also, is he in therapy? If not he should be! There are many good desensitization therapies...

Glad you are here!
