Supporter My Partner Bailed Because Of His Ptsd

Hi, Everyone.

My partner (ex-military/law enforcement) moved out 8 months ago after something triggered his combat PTSD and he started suffering a range of symptoms. I didn't see it coming and was absolutely devastated. We are really struggling to put our relationship back together again. The entire situation is tearing me and my children apart and I hate to think how he feels.

His PTSD is self-diagnosed. I'm fairly sure he is suffering depression as well as PTSD, but he disagrees. He is refusing treatment because he says he hasn't found a professional that he has confidence in.

I'm looking for support, advice, strategies, treatment options and somewhere to vent.

Thanking you all in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like your in a bad situation, which is not going to get better until he gets some professional help. PTSD is not something that should be self diagnosed, and cannot be dealt with alone.

Come down to the supporter area, where you will find a lot of useful information and support.

Take care of you and your children as best you can, this is not going to be an easy road for any of you.

If it's self diagnosed, it might not be PTSD. It might be ASD (Acute Stress Disorder), or depression, or GAD (Generalization Anxiety Disorder) or some other anxiety disorder. He needs a diagnosis from a psychiatrist. If he's convinced he has PTSD, he shouldn't have a problem asking a psychiatrist to confirm it.

Oh and, I forgot to say welcome to the forum. :)

Thanks, Amethist.

We had two incredibly happy years together and now I'm dealing with a completely different person who, despite saying he wants to work at it, can barely bring himself to be in the same room as me. And as long as he says he wants to work at it, I seem to be incapable of giving up on him. :(

I'll go look around the supporter area.

Cheers!
