Narcotics.... Keeping Nightmares Away.

I was wondering if any one else has had bad nightmares if they don't take narcotics at night when they have been doing so for over a year.

Background:

I herniated my disc a year ago and had surgery for than then I herniated another one and yet another surgery, I also had a metal plate put in my hand and then taken out and replaced with a plastic plate. After my last back surgery I got a major infection that caused a lot of pain. So I have been on pain killers for a year straight.

Last night I did not take any before bed like I normally do and I kept having this nightmare that my husband was cheating on me and was leaving me for someone else. I would wake up crying and then settle my self and lay back down and go back to bed. I repeated this 5 times. It was a very hard night for me.

Normally when I wake up in the middle of the night I pop a pain pill because wake up in pain normally. That was not the case last night my body actually didn't hurt for one day so I didn't feel the need to use them.

I am wondering if its normal to have nightmares about anything when you body doesn't have the narcotics that it is used to. I hope not because I am trying to do away with them I am so sick of having them in my system because it keeps me from doing things I love to do like driving. I am the type of person even though one doesn't feel like it impairs me anymore I will not drive with it in my system. Its getting summer and I love to go on drives so I want to try to do without them as much as possible so I can drive. Is this a with drawl symptom?

Just looking for Ideas.

I'd go to your doctor and ask about withdrawal. I suspect you may have to gradually reduce the dosage rather than just miss a full dose.

Definitely reduce gradually. I took a high dose of painkillers for years and though I don't know how much you have been taking, I know you will feel some discomfort for about five days if you go cold turkey. At its worst - if you have been taking say...a few Vicodin a day every day - you will most likely get pain in your legs, muscle spasms possibly and tummy trouble as well as trouble sleeping. Do this gradually. It's no fun, but how fantastic if you can get off of them. Sending white healing light.

P.S. I forgot to respond to nightmares. I could barely sleep let alone dream without the meds at first but other people I know definitely had bad dreams. They will go away.
