General Palpitations?

Thank you Movin'On (I love your avatar by the way - he or she looks a real character :) ).

Amethist - ooh - spooky! My knuckles have been aching for the past couple of weeks too. I'd put it down to the cold weather. I think your diagnosis is spot on too - I was wide awake this morning and it was still dark with 1001 things running through my mind. The house thing does seem to be progressing... but we still seem to stumble at every hurdle!

The palpitations did come back yesterday afternoon and stayed throughout most of the afternoon, combined with trembling hands. I presume nerves / stress. Combined with not eating a lot at the moment (more nerves - and apparently that does run in our family as my Dad is the same) equals a none too healthy me!!!

Hopefully the stress levels will lessen as this week goes on. The Rose oil knocked me out last night - to begin with anyway...

Thank you xxx

Oh boy - were they back with a vengeance yesterday!

To cut a lo-o-o-ng story storter, I had a phone call to say that our mortgage application had been rejected because our solicitor had failed to supply the information she said she would. It transpires this morning that she could never have supplied it as she isn't recognised by the mortgage company - but that's a whole different story.

Anyway, as soon as I got the call the palpitations were back - plus the tremors - so I guess I have the answer!

I find that when I can attach a symptom to a cause or even hear that others experience the same thing, it eases my mind a bit. It's not knowing or understanding that terrifies me.

Knowledge is power!

I hope today goes better for you.

Do you know how to check your pulse? If you feel your pulse in your wrist and it is very irregular, it needs checked further. I may NOT just be coffee or caffeine. The first step would be seeing what the rhythm actually is. Just on a cardiac monitor or more likely an electrocardiogram. If a fire station is nearby, they could put you on the monitor and look at the rhythm, for example. At least here in the States anyway.

Even irregular rhythms have a wide range of causes and treatments. Some require immediate treatment, some are benign. The only way to know is for a medical professional to look at what is on the monitor or ECG.

One thing though, if you do NOT get it checked, just the worry on top of everything else produces the stress chemicals in your body that can add to the issue as far as the palpitations. Sometimes one can get it checked, be told it's nothing serious and that alone can decrease the palpitations.

Like mentioned before. If you are having other symptoms then it requires quick evaluation. Dizziness, chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, etc. I could go into the physiology of it all but basically it involves an alteration in circulating blood sometimes.

Oh, and as to the stress causing it. Yes, if stress causes it, you know part of the triggering. But you still have the RESPONSE. If it is just anxiety, then it may be an annoyance alone. But perhaps there is some other issue physiologically.

I will use the stress cup analogy. We all,at younger ages, have a "cup" that does not overflow. We have young strong hearts and bodies and we can do most anything with no "overflow" No symptoms. But as time marches on, things change. Sometimes at an early age. So, with activity, we get symptomatic. If someone has chest pain only with exertion, then , yes, the pain goes away with rest but the underlying problem is still there and needing evaluated. The "cup" overflows with activity. So the chest pain would still need evaluated with perhaps a cardiac stress test to see WHAT happens during activity, but in a closely monitored setting.

You could use the same analogy for back pain, or gastric distress or many other ailments.

If your body is trying to tell you something with symptoms, listen to it and get checked and hopefully be reassured it is nothing.

Thank you ISH :inlove: for the concern and for the explanation. I promise to go and see the doctor...

Not sure what would happen if I tipped up at our local fire station... my blood pressure could go through the roof!!! :roflmao:

Can you imagine the look on the faces of the firmen if you asked them to check your heart Toria.

Not something they do in the UK ISH, but good suggestion. That would certainly put her heart rate up though LOL.

Palpitations occur occasionally for me- sometimes when I am sleeping or when there is an extreme situation, which happens occasionally. It seems as if my heart will pop out of my chest and my hands get extremely shaky. I let it ride out. Not the most comfortable feeling to experience.

Hello KatB - that's exactly the same as my symptoms - thank you. It is a very odd sensation, especially when it's new to you as it is to me.

Thank you

Well, I finally went to the Doctor this morning and she was lovely - I'm booked in for an ECG on Monday afternoon as well as blood tests for things like Thyroid disorders and... early menopause - again!!!

I'm glad that I went because she was a lot more understanding than I thought - she is looking at stress as a cause, but also other causes too.

Thank you all for your encouragement xxx
