I would like to ask a question about Post Traumatic Stress Dissorder, i would appreciate all answers.

Can i witness a traumatic event and be part of another, and two years later suffer from PTSD?

Can the Intrusive Thoughts realte to your trauma but not be direct flashbacks?

Such as: Constant thoughts about things going fast - relating to being hit by a car and seeing a plane crash?

Thanks Callum

PTSD can occur years after the experience that initially triggered it.

Witnessing a traumatic event can contribute to getting PTSD, as well as being involved in a traumatic event.

Intrussive thoughts are not really flashbacks. Intrussive thoughts are simply you thinking about what happened, and Flashbacks are a visual memory of the actual event. As such, flashbacks are usually true to the event as you remember it, while intrussive thoughts are abit more free to view differant aspects. It seeing a speeding car makes you remember the night of your crash, and you think "hey, how stupid are they" and causes unnerving anxiety, that may be an intrusive thought. If, however, seeing a speeding car causes you to remember what the wreck you were in looked like, that would be a flashback.

Have you been to a therapist yet Callum? No one here can diagnose you, and as such, you really should see someone if you want to start understanding. No sense guessing here.

I have experienced many different trama's so this very happens to me all the time. I will be upset about being raped, but I will have a flashback of my father beating my mother. PTSD damages, and is a memory based disorder... so in a sense if I know my disorder well enough yet, your memory will bring up what it is wishes related or not.

Also, I do believe delayed PTSD is what they call it when it takes sometimes years to show signs of damage.

I hope I could help..maybe lol..

I It just confuses me.

Thanks for the help. Callum

Yes you can have PTSD, however; you could have a myriad of other aspects that have nothing to do with PTSD, being good old fashioned posttraumatic stress due to what you have seen / been involved, and may just need some minor therapy to get rid of the few symptoms you have.

Experiencing trauma and / or witnessing trauma, does not equate to having PTSD.

You need to see a psychiatrist for correct evaluation.

I concur with Anthony; the answer to your question is yes but you need a professional diagnosis for PTSD. Intrusive thoughts don't necessarily equate to PTSD. There are a set of criteria one must meet to be properly diagnosed. That is not to downplay the anxiety and intense feelings that you have experienced/are experiencing in the slightest, but only a licensed professional who has experience in dealing with PTSD should make the assessment as to whether or not it is in fact PTSD or some other issue(s).

Hopefully you will get in with your doctor and they will help. As always we are here to listen and lend a helping hand whenever we can. I hope that this helps and that your current symptoms ease up. PTSD is not a fun thing to live with.
