Ptsd And Dental Woes

Meadowsweet

Try putting your tongue at the top of your mouth, just behind your front teeth, with your lips not quite together as you lay down to sleep.

You can still breath fine, but it keeps your back teeth apart, for a while at least.

I am having to really try not to grind my teeth, as I think I have loosened another one.

I have a lot of dental damage due to this, and unfortunately my dentist just kept fixing things without addressing the issue. I was living in too much of a depressive fog to even be aware, but once I woke up out of it I found a better dentist and got a mouthguard.

Meadowsweet, the damage can be serious and much more expensive (and upsetting) in the long run. I would worry that your dentist isn't taking any action - mine let things get to a terrible point and I suspect I'd have a case against her for negligence if I had the energy or inclination to pursue it. I now see a highly qualified dentist (he's a consultant and teaches at a dental school) and even though his fees are high it actually costs me less than before, because the entire focus is on prevention and I haven't had to have any work done for three years.

I think there are different points of view on over the counter mouthguards versus custom made ones. I've got a custom made acrylic one (occlusal splint). It has been very difficult to have something in my mouth. It took me a year to feel fine about it, but I persevered because I didn't want any more damage. I started with a less intrusive option which is a soft cover for one arch, but I ground through them so quickly it wasn't worth it. My dentist expects the splint to last for about 10 years so it's worth the initial investment.

The hardest part for me was having the cast made, but I took diazepam for that.

The wrong mouthguard can do a lot of damage, too, in the mouth of a hypervigilant PTSD sufferer.

Grinding against one on the roof of my mouth that my dentist gave me shifted my bite and destroyed some of the enamel. Headaches, mouth pain, and gum swelling too...for almost a year before I decided it wasn't that *I* was somehow *doing it wrong or making too much out of it* but that it just wasn't working.

My dentist sent me to an oral surgeon, who worked with him to make me one that works for me.

They both ate the cost...and I learned that speaking up sooner would have been ok.

Unlike when I was going to the dentist I was growing up...where you didn't dare admit pain or you'd get punished.

Cosmetically I'm ugly because of my teeth. I had an accident about age 2, that has made my adult teeth come through at different levels.

So I'm not interested when it comes to cosmetics and treatment for looking good. Its just not going to happen. So perhaps I care a little less than other people do.

teeth are there to be able to eat with.

@meadowsweet: You are not ugly, trust me. God and anyone worth their weight in gold sees right through your imperfections and into your heart. Trust me, I know lots of beautiful smiles who have ugly hearts! At the same time, if you find it really problematic then you can come up with a plan. I am taking care of my teeth one step at a time! You smile from your heart- honestly, it is true!

I'm tense as hell everywhere, except apparently my teeth. Never even though about this b/c never had teeth grinding problems. Although now that you've mentioned it Piratelady, maybe that's why my jaws hurt off and on. Never thought about it.

I go to the dentist once a year and have to fork out a small fortune for work. I grind my teeth as well. I also have decay in the side of my teeth. It is well worth getting a good dentist and getting the work done. I am glad I work so I can pay for it. Before when I was at home, I could not afford to get it done. Lucky I don't need crowns. Wow... teeth sure are expensive. Brush and look after them. I don't want to end up eating liquidised foods or baby foods...Especially loving steaks like I do :P
