Tomatis Method

Hey Empowered,

Oh my goodness. My beloved voice teacher passed away a long time ago. I believe she mentioned the Tomatis Method to me. I would love to know more about it! Thank you, CS

Like Anthony, I've had some loss in hearing due to my military service; although it is not severe. But I notice that when my anxiety level increase, causing me to become hypervigilant and then my hearing becomes sensitive. At times it's almost like "super" hearing but I can't focus on any specific sound or location; it all comes flooding in at me. Usually at the same time, my vision gets blurry but I am acutely aware of quick movements.

Marlene & All, Great informative comments. Yes! I do not "Process" all incoming sounds etc. because some become distractions to others as I rule out possible dangers around me. It makes me miss content during a conversation because until I sort out the danger, the conversation becomes lower on hierachy of safety. Does that make sense?

I would not be surprised if I have what Marlene describes; doctors only tell me my hearing is not normal but they can't treat it.

Huh. Good info and describes a lot of things I experience. I also have some hearing loss (aircraft and race cars) and tinnitus. But it is like I don't have a filter for all the noise that floods me...esp when PTSD is bad. And then I can hear a person speaking but it sounds like Chinese to me... cannot work out what they are saying.

Yes, I have hearing problems. I do have tinnitus, though I'm not sure it's entirely to blame for how much of conversation I miss out on. I may have just some regular hearing loss, because I've noticed a recent loss of hearing. I have to have closed captioning on whenever I watch tv, now, too, because I can only make out half of what people are saying. I know the tinnitus was caused from having to take advil round the clock for bad headaches when I started going into pre-menopause.

I voted yes, but I have Tinnitus! I don't know if it is part of PTSD or in addition to it. Whatever it sucks hearing that fricking buzzing sound all day long. Drives me batty some days.
She Cat, I found it interesting that you describe your tinnitus as buzzing. Mine is more high-pitched ringing, in kind of a pulsing manner.

I seem to have excellent hearing, but when people are talking I can hear them talk but what they say makes no sense. I can hear the words but it takes me a bit to figure out what it is they are saying. That happens when I my stress levels are high. It's like they are talking on a satellite connection or something. People who talk too fast make me nervous because they send my brain into hyper drive trying to keep up.

Yes, Tinnitis which makes me crazy and trouble processing what people say when I'm under stress. I'm pretty sure it's not that they are not speaking loudly enough, I just can't understand what on earth they are saying unless they really do repeat themselves loudly.

No idea whether it's PTSD related or not, but interesting results.

I have what medics call emergency ears, we get em' as we age, years of exposure to the sirens with little insulation between us and the siren box. Its not really hearing loss on any significant level, just a slight distortion. I still hear fine enough, in fact more acutely than some people my age! LOL. My worst thing is that at work I listen to (sorry) "crap" complaints and whining all day, that I have to concentrate on NOT tuning people out when i'm being 'social'. ;)

I've used lip reading, studying people's facial expression, body language and gestures to try and fill in the words that I miss in normal conversation

Marlene...I am finding this thread because I'm searching for information to help me make sense of the same kind of distorted hearing loss that you describe. I thought I had hearing loss, but it tested "normal." My symptoms are actually better explained by an auditory processing issue, but I'm having a hard time finding an empirical link....grrr. Any information posted here will be very helpful :)

I said yes even though I've not been diagnosed with hearing problems. If I'm in a crowded area or I'm stressed out, I swear my hearing gets so much worse. (mine could very well be related to my ADHD but I don't think there is a way to find out).

Lip reading helps but I still have trouble keeping up in conversations.

I've got tinnitus as well. All my fault though: the result of listening to my iPod too loud. I got all the warning signs in terms of ear pain and ignored it. AAAAGGHHH. *kicks self* :banghead:
