Ptsd Resources In Toronto

I'm afraid that the resources are thin. My friend saw 3 different therapists and was arrested each time because they didn't understand his disorder. Since his PTSD stems from incidents with police, that is the worst thing that could have happened.

CAMH has some info on PTSD but I suspect they are more used to dealing with immigrants who come from war zone countries than Vets or others. And I don't know how effective they are. At this point, I'm looking at home treatment options.

ARRESTED??? That's outrageous! Can you tell me what happened? I saw a good therapist for awhile, Dr. Scott Bishop but after awhile I couldn't afford it. I did an outpatient DBT program at the CAMH, which was pretty good but at the time I was severely agoraphobic and I ended up missing too many sessions. I wish I could try it again now that I'm capable of leaving the house but it's a one shot deal. I'll never get a chance to participate in it again.

Seriously, it makes no sense to me whatsoever to penalize someone for their phobias. They should have taken into consideration the fact of your agoraphobia when they were expecting you to be somewhere that was uncomfortable. I really wonder what people are thinking some times.

I can't get the details from my friend because he triggers when he thinks about it, but I suspect he began to rant thanks to the PTSD and it freaked out the therapist. DUH. And this was even after one had been treating him for a couple of months. So I don't know what really went on, but after the first time that happened he even had lawyers draw up an agreements with the therapists that the therapists would NOT call police. And did they did anyway!

That's a jaw-dropper for sure. It even makes ME want to rant.

My friend is on a disability pension thanks to his trauma, so he can't afford some high-priced guru, but at least people should be competent. It makes me wonder whether we're not living in a Banana Republic after all.

Apparently there is so much demand for the DBT program at the CAMH that they can't afford to give second chances despite the fact there was virtually no wait for for the group that took place midday.

What happened to your friend is horrifying. He must feel afraid to talk to anyone now.

I went to Homewood in Guelph, for the depression/anxiety program, but I know they have a trauma program (8 weeks in patient, too intense for me, coed ward too), and an addiction/ptsd program. There is good and bad about Homewood, but overall it helped me quite a bit. PS its covered by OHIP insurance but the wait time is crazy long, I had private insurance and got in within 2 months.

Oh don't get me started. :p TOO LATE! XD :D

I went to a child's clinic for five years, because of my anger issues-it was all a defense mechanism, but they thought I was antisocial, and the social worker is CRAP. Doesn't listen to my problems, answers the phone during sessions, yells at me, tells me to stop crying, has a personality which traumatizes me in therapy and then has a happy personality when with the psych. It's in the Scarborough area, only accepts people from Whitby, Ajax, Scarborough. I DON'T RECOMMEND it. The wait times are LONG, and when you turn 19, you're kicked out and referred to a walk-in clinic. I sooo need an ACTUAL trauma therapist, and I don't think that there are many around. I've ALMOST aged out of the other place thank goodness!

I'm going to go to the Canadian Hearing Society, and I sure do hope they have someone who can deal with trauma. They were REALLY good when I first met them before I knew I was traumatized, I just though it was depression. Anyway, the drawback to that place is that you have to be hard of hearing. Not much help if you're hearing is perfect. >:

I know there is (or was) a research program at Mt Sinai, perhaps they'd have a list of community resources.
I also know of an EMDR place in Newmarket with Dr. Anschutz.
I get emails from a trauma trainer, Dr. Baranowsky who may also have links to resources in the GTA.

Mount Sinai hospital has a co-ed trauma group that runs occasionally. It is led by psychiatric residents-in-training so the quality is hit and miss.

Women's College Hospital also has individual trauma therapy for women (long wait list) and a group program (for women only) called Women Recovering from Abuse (or WRAP). There's an assumption at WRAP that women are only abused by men, in theory removing men from the equation makes it easier for women to heal. This didn't work for me however because most of my abusers/bulliers are women. I got triggered/dissociated immediately and the therapists did very little to handle the situation.

The YWCA also has a trauma/art therapy group called Breakthrough. I attended for a little while and it was okay, but eventually they broke their own rule and let someone who was doing really well just hang around the group indefinitely (the policy is that you can do two 12 week sessions). IMO this decision damaged the group dynamics so I left. New group members are often pretty vulnerable and the participant who stayed on indefinitely totally dominated the group and one-upped ppl with recovery stories. The group moderation was very 'touchy-feely' and didn't do anything about group members run amok.

That said just because I've had a few negative experiences doesn't mean that everyone will. The only relief I've gotten has been through private therapy with a trauma specialist trained in EMDR, if I hadn't gotten married I would not have been able to afford it.

Hello,
My fiance has just been accepted in to the PTSD/Addiction programme at Homewood in Guelph.

He has been to a rehab centre before for alcoholism.

We are both concerned that the Homewood programme might be spiritual/religious based - as we have found that approach does not work for us.

If it is based mainly on the "12 step" AA programme then we are not really interested.

Has anyone recently completed the PTSD and/or addiction programme at Homewood?

Can you tell us more about it? The website only provides basics.
Thanks,
C.
