General Schwarzkopf was a great commander, in the mold of MacArthur, Eisenhower and Patton. Sadly, men like him are few and always will be. He's someone I would have gladly followed into battle, which is a fine epitaph for any man.

RIP

They bad mouthed him when he made honest comments about the second Gulf war. But they were true comments.

He was a military genius without a penchant for politics or politicians.... I have no doubt he or Gen Colin Powell would hsve been elected president post GWI.. they stuck to what they knew best. Powell was a modern day Eisenhower with balls, Schwarzkopf a tamed down Patton and military strategist bar none.

Remembering back then........ He was cautious, I remember him advising caution as in "We won't go until we're damn ready to go" He was being pushed to get it over with, but he held fast and made damn sure all his pieces were in place. Winning was the goal. But his men took precedence over any quick win.

Unfortunately the whole thing was sullied by denying the presence of chemical weapons releases.

In history he will be remembered as the one who revived the image of our military. Strange how the right man emerges at the right time. We are lucky as a nation to have such men.
