Shower Temperature

So, I was wondering if anyone else uses extreme shower temperatures. I use really hot water to the point where I feel as if I have a sunburn when I get out. I don't do it to inflict pain but I find the heat comforting and cleansing. It also is rather grounding for me. One of the showers I use doesn't get very hot water and I absolutely hate using it to the point where I feel very irrationally angry.

Emily, I don't really know what to say. It sounds like the endorphin rush my high school girlfriend, who practiced self harm, got from a super hot shower. She described the residual burn similarly.

I really apologize a million times over if I've offended you. I felt that there was a disconnect; you don't do it to inflict pain but....

((((Emily18)))) *hugs* I wish the best for you, thank you for having the courage to ask this question.

@Crimson
Thank you :) I'm not offended at all. I am almost 100% positive that I don't do it to inflict harm on myself or to get a rush. It isn't very painful, in truth. I get the same comfort from laying out in the sun until I get a sunburn as well. Maybe it's because I'm usually very cold? Or because it keeps me in the "now"? I'm not sure, but I do appreciate your insight!

@Emily18 I can totally relate as I used to (USED TO - which means it can be fought and controlled) do the same thing. For me it was not a self harm thing either. I get cold. Very very cold although at the time I think I used to feel it to feel as well. The cold for me was related to a bone chilling fear. The heat soothed me to a degree. I did not feel the pain of it but luckily had a friend who recognized that I did this and turned the water temperature down in the house so I wouldn't actually burn myself. Is that a possible answer to the shower scalding issue?

@Ms Spock I am assuming based on your response that you did this with consciousness. Always something we try to attain - is consciously directing our behaviours.

@Emily18 do you take a hot shower for that reason or are you reacting to a way that you are feeling? Do you know what that feeling is? Can you pinpoint it? Do you feel the cold when you take the shower or do you realize afterwards that you did it to make you warm?

Yes there is a five minute shower thing. It is about building up resilience.

I like to skin brush before showering - it really makes my skin tingle and warm up and very much returns me to the here and now. It feels very comforting.

I like my shower room to be real warm. My showers begin warm water (rinse off), go to rather hot (lather up and use a loofa), rinse, then crank the handle in the complete opposite way to cold - about 20 seconds. It invigorates me, and the warm room and towel surrounds me with warmth afterwards. I've been doing this since my late teens. I'm 60 and my BP has never gone over 120/80 - not sure if there's a connection. When it's sunny (and I have the time), I like "baking" until almost sunburnt. I dunno - these things just feel good/sensual to me.

I set my hot water heater to 115 F so I won't get burned and then I take as hot of a shower as I can. I only really do it in the winter. For me it is about trying to loosen up my body. I feel stiff and sore and achey and hurting pretty much all the time and the really hot water is my friend.

I do turn the water to very cold (as icy as I can stand) for the final rinse because cold water seals the pores in your hair. I have very curly hair and if I only use hot water I have tremendous frizz. The cold rinse makes my hair prettier. :)
