So Why Is Sex So Taboo?

I love your attitude @rightkindofme . I have little doubt that your kids will grow up to be rounded individuals who are more than capable of making their own decisions in life. I also have little doubt that the world would be a better place if everyone could guide young people in a similar way.

I know it is a bit off topic, but today I read in the news today of a Scottish girl who has become pregnant at the age of 11 years, to a 15 year old , while drunk. She claims she did not know 'you could get pregnant the first time you do it'. It also states that at 8 months pregnant she is smoking 20 a day.

My thoughts, and connection to this thread are - where was her sex education? Where were her parents when she was drunk and having sex?

I rather think if @rightkindofme were in charge this could not have happened, certainly not through ignorance anyway.

To make it worse the 15 year old boy ( friend) is being charged with rape because of her age. There is no discussion about consent or not. She was reported to have said she is looking forward to taking her baby to the swimming pool. How sad and how naive! It reads as if she is talking about getting a new dolly.

What will this do to her body, her mind, her career prospects, her future? Sex education or reproductive education - either way it sounds as if she was not in class that day - and oh yes, she has been suspended at the moment because of bad behaviour.

This, for me is when the lines get so blurred. Of course she could be the victim of horrific abuse, after all her boyfriend is being charged with rape. However, her name has been made public so she is not being considered (legally) the victim of a sex crime. I feel as if I am being very judgmental, but that is not of her, it is of her situation.

If there was more open talk and discussions about sex, - in school, home, society in general - would it prevent young girls like her ending up in this situation, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

I'm finishing a book that would hopefully educate such kids *this week*. I will cross my fingers that it makes it to shelves and does some good.

@Brucielucy , that story is shocking on every level. I have to put a huge amount of responsibility / blame on the parents. How was she allowed to be out, drunk at such a young age, and even now, allowed to smoke 20 a day? It's absolutely disgraceful, and wholly shocking.

I can't help thinking that her future and that of her baby is very bleak indeed since she appears to live without any guidance or concern from her parents/ guardians. It's very sad. I don't think her views of having a baby are particularly naive per se, but completely in line with her age, and lack of maturity to deal with her situation. However, it also seems to show that despite her situation, she still hasn't been educated as to the realities of what having a baby means.

I don't understand, why as both a minor, and a 'victim', she has been publicly named. That makes no sense to me.

She is absolutely a victim, not only by having sex with an older boy, but because she has been so let down by the people who should be looking after her. She is a child. I just hope she gets the right support to help her through all this, both emotionally and practically, but I'm very concerned that she won't. A truly shocking story. My heart goes out to her.
