I thought it would be neat to start a music thread with the songs that people use to either cope with their PTSD, calm them down or ground them after dissociating or a flashback, bring hope, understand their emotions, or any other way that music helps them through their PTSD related struggles. Please post (1) artist & song title that helps you (2) how it helps you (if you are able to explain this, if not that's just fine too) and (3) lyrics, if you find these relevant.
As for me, I often have difficulty identifying or processing emotions, but music allows me to understand my feelings when I am unable to verbalize them.
(1) My song is "One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)" by Wilco.
(2) The mood of this song sounds, to me, a bit hopeful in the mist of despair and touches on some more personal concepts that I am not quite able to explain fully because they are a bit abstract in my head. This song helps me process a few parts of my traumas and hits on my mood in just the right way to induce a feeling of hope, but while still recognizing and respecting the intense pain I feel.
(3) Lyrics:
This is how I'll tell it
Oh, but it's long.
One Sunday Morning
Oh, one son is gone.
Against the weather dawning
Over the sea
My father said what I had become
No one should be.
Outside I look lived in
Like the bones in a shrine
How am I forgiven?
Oh, I'll give it time.
This I learned without warning
Holding my brow
In time we thought I would kill him
Oh, but I didn't know how.
I said it's your God I don't believe in
No, your Bible can't be true
Knocked down by the long lie
He cried I fear what waits for you.
I can hear those bells
Spoken and gone.
I feel relief I feel well
Now he knows he was wrong.
Ring 'em cold for my father
Frozen underground
Jesus I wouldn't bother
He belongs to me now.
Something sad keeps moving
So I wandered around.
I fell in love with the burden
Holding me down.
Bless my mind, I miss
Being told how to live.
What I learned without knowing
How much more I owe than I can give.
This is how I tell it
Oh, but it's long.
One Sunday morning
One son is gone.
