I found this was true with me to an extent simply because my emotions as a child had not been met with empathy, so it did not come naturally to me to react empathetically, openly, lovingly with my daughter at all times. I knew I needed to do it, and often did, but in some situations, I would be triggered or relating from the dysfunctional lessons I learned as a child (it's not safe to be emotional, being emotional is for other people, etc.) and I have had to work through those to get to a place where I'm continually empathetic instead of often empathetic. I basically found my daughter's intense, vibrant emotional state to be a bit overwhelming, foreign, even fearful: thanks mom & dad!!!

Here's to therapy and to good chosen families to replace crappy birth ones., where we can buy or earn second chances. ;)

Reading this article brought back many memories, for me, in which, I avoided my mom, because I knew, as a child, she couldn't handle them, and sought my dad's help. Even though, my dad was emotionally withdrawn from me. Unable to share any strong emotions, except anger. My dad spent 5 of his first 9 years, under Nazi occuptation, being liberated, a week before his 9th birthday. Never realizing that there was psychological reason, behind my mom's action.
