News Trigger Warnings Becoming A Fad?

I think we're moving toward becoming a society where anything that hurts your feelings must be eliminated and/or attacked. Negative feelings are becoming intolerable to people. Instead of taking ownership and responsibility of ones self, we're demanding that the rest of the world change and/or insulting them (in the process).

Instead of empowering oneself by taking control of the situation (by removing ones self and/or learning how to ------gasp!------ tolerate uncomfortable feelings [ahem, which was foundational to my recovery!] through the use of coping skills), it's easier to play the victim and demand that everyone else changes to suit our whims.

Please don't get me wrong------- none of this precludes the use of manners and respect!

Tangential, but very much related is the use of the word "hater" to describe anyone who doesn't unconditionally support us. Someone disagree with you or what you say? Call 'em a hater! Instead of being able to tolerate criticism (which is a part of life), it's easier to deflect and insult the other person.

We've become a society of people who cannot tolerate anything negative that hurts our feelings or upsets us. And it's quite sad. :(

It's so annoying that it's being used as a means to describe being upset. But it's not new that mental health terms are used incorrectly. People saying they're depressed when they're really just sad. There's a massive difference between being sad and being depressed. There's a massive difference between being upset and being triggerd.

Content warnings I can get behind and it really pisses me off that Netflix and the like don't use them. Sometimes I'd lie to be able to watch thinks without having to google the synopsis of it first. Or even know ok there's scenes of sexual violence in this expect it and be prepared for it. But watching something (and it seems like there's rape scenes in everything, things you really don't expect there to be rape scenes in)and not expecting it has triggered me a few times.

The thing with trigger warnings is there's bound to be something in anything that's going to upset someone. They therefore become useless and you end up being unable to read or watch anything for fear of being "triggerd".

Amazin Prime does, or at least what ice watched of it.

I would really like it if people would adopt another word to stand in for some of the situations that "trigger" is used in, because I do use trigger warnings on social media. In my daily life, I have a practical use for trigger warnings. I like horror films, so a lot of my social media involves topics that aren't really intended for general audiences. It feels rude to not give people the option of excluding images of elder abuse when they do a search for "dementia," for example.

There is a culture around trigger warnings on social media websites like tumblr that makes me very uncomfortable. I don't like being pressured to use warnings in situations that I think are unnecessary. Anyone going onto my blog that does not want to see gore or horror images should not be there at all. I also think it puts a lot of stress and anxiety on people that create content instead of on the individual that needs to be looking out for themselves and assessing their own needs. It can be very frustrating, because it is a good place to find other women that share my interests.

Until I started researching this trend, I was unaware of what has been going on in the colleges. It has really been a eye opener. In my opinion it is very extreme and I think it is utter nonsense. Just my opinion. I hate victim self pitying groups.

Edited to add, I wasted so many years of my life in victim thinking and feelings that followed so I am past guilty of this that I hate. Yet I learned so much once I woke up and really began to work on getting better and being proactive.

I think content warning is more appropriate than trigger warning. A trigger is personal and subjec...
The tricky thing about using "content warning" is that it means to a lot of people that the content isn't as graphic as something labeled as a "trigger warning" or that it is an article or a non-fictional text post.

content isn't as graphic as something labeled as a "trigger warning"

But then what content is "graphic enough" to warrent a trigger warning? And saying that is still mind reading.

i use content warnings, on here, like this. "My entire past is on my first diary post but it has pretty graphic content". Im not triggered by graphic content so if I heard that, Id go read it anyway. But for those that are triggered by graphic content, its advising them this has graphic content. And it is most certianly graphic enough to be a trigger. Its just that i dont know if they are triggered by graphic content or not so im just saying "head's up". Im not presumming to know if they are triggered by graphic content or not.

True - but Warning: Content contains (list content) is pretty clear, don't you think?

I don't see how it's any different than 'trigger warning for (list elements), and kind of prevents trigger warning from just becoming a phrase unto itself, where it's meaningless.
