Trying To Get Through Halloween...

Happy Halloween...anyone else who will be really glad when the stores aren't full of terror-inducing paraphernalia? We have kids, some of whom are teenagers, so it is impossible to completely avoid all of this. Last night one of the teenagers wanted to go to the Halloween store to buy a costume--I took her but sat in the car. I had to come in and pay, and a man holding a fake scythe stood behind me, too close. I had to ask him to move. Not to mention the sounds and bloody costumes everywhere. I'll be so glad when this is over.

I celebrate HAPPY HARVEST, not HALLOWEEN. I was lucky to find a HAPPY HARVEST flag at the store a number of years ago, so it is proudly hanging on my door today. I just hope no trick-or-treaters show up, as I have little to give them, only a few candy bars from before I went on the diet. Somehow I've managed to avoid them since I started my diet.

I don't shop much, so I have not been accosted with much at the stores, since I have not been in them. None the less, I have suffered by the candy isle (and not entered it) at the grocery. I'm on a diet and also have too many cavities in my teeth. Who needs it! I like Christmas decorations a lot more, but I am always disappointed in how FEW Thanksgiving decorations there are in the stores. They always seem to jump right from harvest time to Christmastime altogether.

I love the spooky stuff, there's 'Halloween' decorations up at my house year-round. Hopefully I'll be able to handle the startle response well enough this evening to pass out candy. Sometimes it makes me jump out of my skin to hear a knock at the door, maybe it won't be so bad if I'm expecting it. I love seeing the cute little ones all dressed up! My plan is to have the light on for a set amount of time, early so I can give the tiny kids treats and done before the older kids come around being greedy. No costume? No candy.

For me, the spooky part of the Halloween displays are the red and green growths sprouting beside them. The 90 days of Xmas have arrived... Only 56 days to go.

Glad yours will be over tonight.

Loathe Halloween.

I'm sitting with the lights low in order to avoid four year olds in witch costumes ringing the bell demanding sweets. News flash - not everyone likes children. Just because it's a child, why is it supposedly acceptable for someone to turn up on your doorstep demanding free stuff from you? No different from an adult doing it. I think kids should only go to relatives' and family friends' houses, otherwise it's just door to door begging.

I truly hate the horror stuff. No fun for me, given the nature of some of my traumas.

@Hashi,

You're awesome. I totally agree.

Horror isn't fun for me. Being scared isn't fun for me. Nobody gets this! Maybe if they lived a terror filled life then they'd get it. Fake terror = fun because your safety isn't threatened. Real terror = no fun because you lose the feeling of safety (a basic human NEED). I wish people could SEE this!

I don't like being around kids either. Their voices are high. They scream and shreik which triggers me. I can't tell anyone this because then I'm the evil one who hates kids!

I'm not terribly fond of kids on a daily basis either. Something about playing dress-up makes it fun though, not sure why. Maybe it's because I wish I could walk around dressed like a lion or a princess or something... I miss that, can't do that without getting funny looks now. It's cold, rainy, and there's only three porch light on for the whole street- guess I won't need to buy any candy until at least Valentine's day :(

I don't like the chaos and frenetic energy of Halloween...it's harder because when I married my husband, I became instamom to three hyper boys...it's hard for anyone to "get it"unless they have PTSD.

OMG, I will be so happy when I don't have to get started by blood and guts at every corner! I don't mind that people have fun with Halloween, and our community is very aware of 'friendly' costumes for kids......nonetheless, looking forward to tomorrow morning!

Took my youngest and his friends trick or treating in the rain. Stood on the sidewalk while they went to houses. Last house we went to had a haunted yard--complete with people dressed up like zombies. I waited on the other end of the block. Glad that is over for another year. I managed ok, but am glad it is over. Something about the surreal looking costumes, even if they aren't scary, really bothers me. I'm pretty sure it is related to my problem with dissociation.

Hate it!

Have stuck a bowl of candy outside...don't really care if one kid takes it all...just don't knock on my door. I hate being scared, but it seems to be a daily occurrence. I do not understand the fascination of intentionally wanting to be scared.

It doesn't bother me much. I like the little trick or treaters and their laughter. The older ones I could do without. Teenage level. However, I live in a rural area so we don't get any trick or treaters. The first year I moved back to the area we lived in a row house. I was about 6 months pregnant and I had the biggest bowl of candy ever. I was so excited. However, when the trick or treaters got to my building they crossed the street. If it wasn't so cold out I would have been sitting outside. I did think of running after them, but I thought the sight of a pregnant woman running after kids begging them to take my candy would be too much and possibly have the police questioning me.

Overall, I am okay with it. I don't go to haunted houses anymore. I just remind myself that they are all fake. Some disturbing, but still fake. That seems to help.
