News U.s. Healthcare System

Even if you change insurance companies, if you don't have a lapse in insurance coverage they should not be able to deny you for a pre-existing condition. AND thanks to our current health care reform within a few years insurance companies will not be able to deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions. So maybe Obama's healthcare reform isn't such a bad thing for you, after all.

Does the fact that I like one thing about it, or even more than one thing, mean I have to support the whole thing? Or that the Republican party is wrong for opposing it in it's current form? Or is the AMA necessarily wrong for lobbying for certain changes?

Do we have to like the whole thing as plopped down in front of us or be considered evil, heartless, selfish capitalists who hate poor people?

Wow, are you perhaps a little defensive? I did not say that you had to support the whole thing nor did I call you evil, heartless or selfish. I was merely pointing out that there was some part of it that could potentially be beneficial to you. Just because you hate healthcare reform does that mean you can't appreciate some components of it?

Actually, doing away with exclusion of pre-existing conditions and removing the "life time cap" were very positive things that should have been done a long time ago.

Wow, are you perhaps a little defensive?

Yeah... I am. :notworthy:

I was thinking about this earlier tonight and I am really wound up about this. Unnaturally so. Although "evil" "heartless" and "selfish" are actually things I've heard conservatives called ON THIS SITE... so one might suppose there is some reason for overreacting. But it's not fair to overreact here with people who aren't saying it.

I think I have at least three issues going on here that have nothing to do with politics. Worry about the government wasting money and bankrupting the economy is just really reminding me of my dad and my ex-husband wasting all our money and then having nothing left for me. I'm worried the government will spend recklessly and abandon me and my children. Which isn't a political issue at all, and I probably shouldn't even be talking about it on this thread. But there you go.

Secondly, I have a couple very liberal relatives who have said very very ugly and destructive things to me in the past because of the way we're choosing to raise our family and our religious values. This is also not political and not pertinent to healthcare (the subject theoretically under discussion) but it is influencing the way I react to certain arguments. And I need to fix that.

Thirdly, I guess, is simply that I still get defensive because I think no one is going to listen to me or believe me. So I argue too hard too soon. Or something.

I'm not good at political debate. Or any kind of debate, really. And should probably just get off of here and shut up and go back to what I'm good at doing... like polishing furniture. Or knitting.

People can use the terms "conservative" and "liberal" in broad sweeping statements as a means to identify or to vilify. I am very much a fiscal conservative, believing in small government, balanced budgets, flat taxes, etc. I am much more liberal in my views on social policy. I have always thought the measure of a society's greatness lies in its ability to take care of its less fortunate members.

So I am a fiscal conservative, social liberal.....and there are many that would argue that both cannot live in the same body.

All I know is that I have two master's degrees, a full time job, and I can't afford health insurance for my family of 4. Something needs to change. As you all have illustrated, it's a complicated mess, stemming from a long series of idiotic administrations, in a country that is phobic of the words "socialized medicine." What is medicare/medicaid?! It should be available to all.
