I am admitting to myself that I am depressed after I denied it from myself and others. I have thoughts of suicide. I feel completely hopeless. I don't take showers for long periods of time. My sleeping pattern has shifted. I either don't sleep enough or I sleep too much. I haven't told anyone this and I need something to help me.

Do you have access to a therapist or psychiatrist? If you do, then by all means go see one and start from there. If you are having suicidal thoughts then there's definitely something going on. I'm sorry that you are feeling so hopeless...I do too, so although I can't really offer any good advice, please at least know that you are not alone. I'm getting counseling and seeing a psychiatrist for free because I'm at a university, but I understand that it could be quite expensive outside. Have you considered calling the hopeline when you are feeling suicidal? There are also many online support groups and other places where you could get help. Hang in there! Don't give up--we are all in this together.

Welcome. I'm new here too. Take heart I've been there as well... as many of us here I think. Sometimes I feel depressed and overwhelmed with stress in my life now, so like maelstrom, I'm not sure I'm the wisest one. Find whatever support you can. Open up to someone in your life if you can about how you are feeling... that has helped me in the past. calling hotlines is good too. When I was at my worst, I would promise to do little things every day- get dressed - or cook one proper meal, or take a walk, etc. maybe for you it's to take a shower every day - or change your clothes - Even just doing one little thing helped me.

therapy talking etc is good. Have you looked into good sleep hygienne and exercise? Good sleep hygiene is something to look into too... (going to bed at the same time, having a bedtime routine... this sort of advice helped me... it took a while for it to work but it did help...) Exercise (which helps sleep) and decent sleep every day help... of course the thing is that when you are depressed its hard to motivate to exercise... (for me it was) but exercise can help with sleep and well as chemical related parts of depression (releases endorphins etc)

There are lots of different treatments for depression...

The best treatment for depression is participating in relationships and activities you would enjoy if you weren't depressed. Participate until the mood passes and you discover you are enjoying yourself.
