What Has Ptsd Taught You?

What does not kill me, makes me stronger.

I am, at the moment, at a stage where I am rebuilding my life after living with PTSD for 27 years. I finally realized that I needed a new identity and that I could no longer be the person I was because of PTSD related issues. I see myself as a better person and stronger with a passionate drive to help others overcome their personal issues. PTSD is not a death sentence that I thought it was, but a challenge to become more self-aware and not take things for granted. I am studying to become a Social Service Worker with the hopes to study further and obtain a PhD in social work. My specialty is going to be PTSD and substance abuse.

Hmmm. PTSD has taught me that I can manage through the smoke and mirrors, do and even excel at some of the things that frighten/trigger/stress/dread me the most. Also that if I stumble, fall, or get stuck in cycling I can pick myself up, dust myself off, and get back on track again - even when my mind taunts me with "you'll never" or "I can't" or "always" statements.

PTSD has taught me that I am, due to my traumatic experiences, better equipped to deal with adverse life situations than most of those who do not have trauma backgrounds. It took a very long time though.

That it's just fine to be human, I'm not an obstacle to others, it's not a weakness and there are so many people /just/ like me. All rather big realizations I'm still struggling putting to everyday perspective. But it's there. Step by step.
