Being on my Grandmothers porch in the spring of the year when I was a little boy. The farm was a wonderful place full of adventure and constant suprize, I can still smell the green grass along with the flowers planted beside the steps. I can hear my Ma humming softly as she worked in the kitchen early each morning. The klinking of the dishes as the table was set for breakfast, along with the smell of bacon and eggs frying on the stove.
I would run to see my dog ( Caesar ) each morning and looked farward to our day of play and adventure. My Aunt Sally and Lucy would begin to make their way home to the big house after breakfast, walking the mile or so holding their hands, I would stay with them untill the afternoon. The home place was very big with many out buildings to play in and around, me and Ceaser taking on the world as pirates or perhaps as paul bunyan and babe the blue Ox.
After a long day of pretending to be one thing or another along with a great lunch with water drawn from the well with a bucket, we would begin the chores. Mt Aunt Lucy, even though blind could navigate the farm with ease. I remember the call she used to round up the milk cows, we would then milk them by hand. She let me sit on the three legged stool with her as she milked each one. I would then have the pleasure to drink the warm milk from the bucket, I can still taste it, as sweet as the clover that the cows ate.
The chickens were fed and watered, the eggs collected, they would make their way into the chicken house to be closed up for the night, all is well today. My Grandmother would be there shortly to pick us up after a long day of teaching school. I can see her car coming down the road as I type these words, we would carry the milk home and the churning would begin on the porch where my day started only a few hours before. The fresh butter was molded into cakes and gottenready for sale the next day along with my eggs, I was saving my egg money to buy my Mother a Christmas gift.
I could recount fond memories for more time than I have, however I will leave one last thought, If there is truely a Heaven and I hope there is. My purfect place to spend eternity would be there during the time I remember as being the happiest of all my years.
Great and Happy Thoughts to all, Legend
