(I was going to do this as a poll but decided it was better as an open-ended question.)

Some people in my country think that WWIII has started. Do you agree? Disagree?

Do the current wars and rumors of wars affect your life or your symptoms?

Some of my nightmares about past trauma are now including fears of future war. War is integrated into my childhood in a way I can't detail online, and I'm processing childhood trauma in therapy, so some of this is related to that - and some of it is related to the general anxiety about war that is increasing in the culture where I live.

If I let myself go there? I stop trying to live. Not as in suicide. As in I shift gears into crisis mode, and that's not living, that's surviving. It's something I do very well, but it ain't all this shit I can barely make myself care about in the first place (homes, and jobs, and paperwork, and "stuff", and appearances, and, and, and, and). So I have to very firmly remove myself from the concept.

War breaks out? I'll either be dead or fine. One of the two. If I'm not dead? I'm good at f*ck society's rules, and let's make this shit work. I never really came all the way back from that the first time.

So I refuse to care.

There isn't anything I can do about it.

I will not stop my life, over something that hasn't happened, that I cannot do anything about should it happen, but will just have to roll with and take shit as it comes. I refuse to stop my life. Ahem. Sometimes several times a day.

I agree that we should focus on our own lives. That's not to say we shouldn't care about others that suffer around the world, its just that there's something sick about the news outlets spending every damn minute on the latest incident of carnage.

As to whether this is WW3 or not, I dunno. It's very different from those two wars. In WW2, millions died and just about every major power in the world was involved. Even some countries that were officially neutral were involved secretly.

On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of nihilism in the world right now. ISIS or whatever their called has the core belief that we are living in end times and that they are fighting Armageddon. There are many in the west that have similar beliefs. Once you have people believing in that, there's an impulse to make it self-fulfilling.

Here's the scary part. Pakistan is the most unstable country on Earth, and they have nuclear weapons. Exactly how far away are we from that going bad? Yesterday, Turkey shot down a Russian jet. Why? Because that part of the world wasn't f'd up enough already, that's why. It seems like cooler heads will prevail, but it also seems like all we need for this to go out of control are a couple more "incidents". All the groundwork is there for this to spin out of control.

I think the 24 hours news cycle likes to promote a whole lot of situations as the end of the world. Evolution means our brains are primed towards assessing, watching and processing threats much more than we do positives, and with PTSD that goes to a whole new level.

The 24 hours news cycle is basically about selling advertising space. You can often tell what angle the news segment will have just by seeing what the advertisements are on the show. It is not about providing quality, in depth, incisive, intellectually stimulating and promoting citizens engagement in their democracies (or whatever) it is about blowing things out of proportion, it is about all or nothing thinking - you are for or against us rather than you might not be interested in this situation and be thinking about something else, it is about magnifying situations beyond their impact with faulty science, it is about making money for the advertisers. In fact if you are familiar with all of David Burns' distorted cognitions, quite a few appear on a regular basis.

In Australia, despite the scientific evidence the media keeps on with the "question" of climate change, when other countries around the world are putting programs in place. Neoliberalism in Australia means approximately 1 in 5 jobs in the CSIRO have been axed and we no longer have a Minister for Science because of the inconvenient truths.

If you watch the news in Australia you would sometimes think we are at imminent threat of a terrorist attack, but in actual fact 15 people died from terrorism in Australia in a 10 year period whilst 22,852 (or 22,825 can't remember) died from suicide in the same ten year period.

Fear and anxiety have their uses for capitalism, consumerism, social control and the ways in which a society will allow things to happen. There are bigger discourses at play here.

There are so many times, throughout history, that people thought the end of the world had arrived, our historical period is no more important and no less important than other periods of history.

Could clear and concise debate, which is reality based backed by solid research help the world, I believe so, but will we get it, I am pessimistic on this front, there are vested interests. This is not to say that there are not serious threats that we as individuals, communities and nations have to deal with but I don't think it is as over the top as it is portrayed.

You are much more likely to die from suicide or domestic violence than you are from terrorism but the billions are not spent on mental health or breaking the changes of domestic violence. But you would never know that from watching the news.

I would suggest @Justmehere of limiting your exposure of the news - and perhaps go print based from reputable sources, rather than watching random televisual displays which may or may not be reality based.

I wish you did not feel in such as way as you did when you started this thread. I would argue in the negative and say no, WWW3 has not begun, except perhaps, in the minds of news and producers and news executives with the subsequent exploitation by advertising agencies and executives.

One downside of social media is how it feed quickly into our fears. And consumerism loves to tell us we aren't okay, in any form. We need this and that....we aren't safe, we might not be safe, we might die (duh), we might have bad feelings (of course)...etc. Let people get carried away on social media and then some will be suckered into purchasing bunkers before any realistic fears have been validated by the people really watching the situation.

Anyway, I also don't think a world war has started. But the enemy scenario has changed and I think we need good leaders who don't fuel fear-mongering and hate but work together with other leaders to sort this shit out. Shitty leaders stir up fear in the people (what Trump and too many characters would be doing, so I pray he is not elected...not to make this political!). Good leaders deal directly with the problem but help maintain confidence and some sense of safety...maybe caution, but not widespread paranoia and fear.

@Justmehere This is excellent advice in my opinion. I made the decision to do this about a year, year and a half ago. It was not easy to do at first, but after a few months I started noticing an uplift in my mood. I didn't realise how much it was affecting me.

There is no good news anymore, that sort of story has gone the way of the dodo. When I hear about a major event (like the Paris attack) I will take a quick look through the headlines, but I don't read much of it. It's always the same thing, over and over again.
  • Someone is trying to kill me and everyone I care about.
  • Some disease is trying to kill me and everyone I care about.
  • Some government is trying to kill me and everyone I care about.
  • I will be flat broke if I don't worry about this thing.
  • Someone will steal from me, if I don't buy (product for sale).
  • Some politician is being an asshole.
  • Some celebrity did something mildly embarrassing, so now I am expected to look upon them with disdain. (As if I have never had a few too many drinks then said or done something stupid.)
  • I need to do an excess of one thing because apparently it will prevent heart disease, which will kill me tomorrow apparently.
  • I must abstain from the thing that will prevent tomorrow's heart attack, or will have a stroke tomorrow.
  • It will be cold tommorow, unless it isn't.
  • I must see my doctor and ask about new wonder drug, which has a list of side effects longer than this post is turning out to be.
This is the specific story that made me stop reading the news. I'll put it in the spoiler thing, as it's well, f'ed up for lack of a better term.

A man protesting being forced out of his flat because of a residential development project, committed suicide by cutting off his own head with a chainsaw. Yup, that is the most f*cked up thing I have ever read.

You won't miss out on anything either. When really big news happens, you'll still hear about it. You just won't be constantly bombarded by negativity and fear mongering.

To answer the original question. No I don't think it's WW3. Maybe next week.

From my recall, the world was supposed to end in 2000-so we were to party like it's 1999. Then the world was supposed to end in 2012-So we were supposed to join a cult. Now it's to end in 2016, so we need to dig bunkers. Also, the oceans were supposed to engulf us all by now too (I don't believe in global whining or climate change nonsense) I'm beginning to believe that some people are grossly misinformed and as such are generally best ignored

In my view WW3 is just another 'they'll write it in history, some day' war to shuffle through.

Prefer to take care of my immediate vicinity. As humankind? We'll live. There's enough amazing people out there, always have been. All I need to know about big game shit. That and 'don't stand in their way'.

At the risk of being profiled as some kind of Muslim terrorist;
Sometimes hearing news channels I get thrilled and excited thinking the end could come at any time now, and I will finally have my chance before the Judge of judges. Knowing this keeps me going. I can't wait !
