Why Rules are Rules

I read absolute nonsense such as [DLMURL="http://www.ptsdforum.org/91278-post103.html"]this post from KarmaisaBitch[/DLMURL], and really just shake my head because instead of asking why something is not allowed here, they just run off with their big mouth about something they know nothing about. This man mentions avatars, along with other things locked here... all a bitch and moan because he cannot have his own way, however; if he asked a legitimate question as to why members cannot upload their own avatars, then I would have told him the reason.

The Reason Avatars are Restricted

When the forum began avatars where initially turned off because most peoples connections where slow, so I turned off most of the crap this forum can do so the pages loaded faster for the majority of users. This worked at that initial time. As technology improved over the last couple of years with broadband availability, I have turned more and more features on, however some got restricted after a short time because people uploaded offensive images which where in direct sight of anyone reading. This then triggered members which then had enough complaints to warrant having to take measures of that aspect to ensure such a thing didn't occur again.

So within days avatars where restricted to preloaded one's or a member had to first provide the avatar they wanted in [DLMURL="http://www.ptsdforum.org/thread173/10.html"]the thread where I would upload it on their behalf[/DLMURL], ensuring the image size was correct, the image was not offensive, etc etc.

Again, another aspect that was open briefly though abused immediately and closed within a day or two. If people didn't do these stupid things in the first place, then such restrictions wouldn't exist.

If this forum was not a trauma based forum, then things would be far far different than they are. The facts though is that because trauma has such an impact and an array of symptoms, it is better to simply remove some issues or I have been forced to control some matters upon this forum because there are just so many idiots out there who want to wreck and ruin anything good a community may have going for it.

If in doubt... if you want to question something... I ask you to first stop, think, ASK me privately or openly before running off at the mouth and becoming a troll. KarmaisaBitch got moderated once again because he just can't shut his mouth and stop bitching and causing issues here. A troll is someone who really has nothing constructive to add, they just go through and nit pick a community trying to get everyone angry, upset... taken to their level basically. Sorry, but I just cannot allow that sort of thing to occur here long because far too many endup upset and symptomatic as a result.

Again, if this forum was not for trauma sufferers, then I would have far more features enabled and really just wouldn't care what people did. Though because it is a trauma forum and not just a chit chat place, past experience has resulted in many rules being created, forum aspects turned off or controlled by editors only, etc.

The Reason Posts are Time Limited for Editing

The ability to edit posts has come up in the past by newer members.... why are posts limited in time to edit? Because intially members could edit their posts, though someone had a bad day, went in and deleted all their content, though the problem was that all these other people had given their time to answer them, respond to them, all which then became instantly useless and all the content had to be removed as a result. Imagine someone doing that with a few hundred posts? There would be another thousand posts from others who all just wasted their own time because someone had a bad day and decided to delete all their posted content. This is why the legal policy changed, all content became the property of myself once posted, thus no longer do people waste their time because members now know that their time in responding is now permanent for all to see.

If you want to question a rule, please ask, don't become a troll.

Anthony...
I have never felt as safe on a forum as I do here. And I believe that in discussing and working through PTSD that is a really important thing; being and feeling safe and secure.

Thankyou Anthony for all the hard work that you, Nicolette and the other editors do, in running and maintaining this site. I believe the rules and regs work well. If I was all about the chat and other stuff that you get elsewhere...I would do just that ...go elsewhere.

...again....thankyou

So good to know. I for one, need to work on controlling myself when I feel all in an uproar. I've been working on learning and controlling this PTSD stuff and other behavioral and emotional challenges since they began to escalate this past September.

I find this site supports what my therapist has been helping me to see, to work on, and take responsibility for as I make choices that I try to excuse. Even though it may not seem like I have a choice, I'm gradually seeing that with this "PTSD" I do have one.

It's a learning process for me, all this is so new for me. I am thankful for this forum and its regulations, it helps me in so many ways, and on so many different levels. I for one need this structure to work within, especially right now when I'm in midst of what seems like so much chaos.

Thank you Anthony and Nicolette for all the time and effort you spend investing in this forum, and in all the members and others here. I for one appreciate it greatly!

I like that we don't have avatars on the forums, my laptop (here) is high contrast because I get photophobic with migraines a lot esp. when the 'light' intensity doesn't match (long story).

Avatars are not banned - they are just restricted to content of the picture. I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion we now have a no-avatar policy. As you can see by this post I have an avatar as do many other members.

My bad, I was just assuming so because other mentioned it. I can't see avatars, Nicolette, so I didn't know you had one. Sorry about that. Oh well even so, I've been on other sites where there seem to be photos in every other post. I'm glad this forum isn't like that. Smile.

I actually don't see an avatar Nicolette.... (this is why I thought that).
