Confidentiality breakage

I participate in a small group therapy with a therapist. She is not MY therapist-only for group. On Monday i was severely depressed. There was one other participant and we both spoke about 10 minutes. The therapist had her cell phone out reading text messages that were coming in. She then asked our opinion about a situation SHE was going through with a client. She then read us some text messages, mentioning this girls name. She told us that she’s involved in a DV relationship. She said the girl text daily and throughout the night. She has invited her to live with her. But she is overwhelmed and having health issues because she’s involved constantly with her. She stated she’s sending 4 referrals to my therapist because she’s overwhelmed. She wanted our opinion on what to do.

I’m frustrated with this am I wrong?

No, your feelings aren’t wrong, all kinds of boundaries crossed and confidentiality broken.

I’m not you, but I would quit. I trust no one, and if someone is breaking another’s confidentiality, you better believe they’d break mine.

Living with a client? OMG. This woman needs to be stripped of her license!

My opinion of what to do ...is to tell your therapist what this therapist is doing in group.

I see my therapist tomorrow and plan to discuss

First do no harm. I could not trust this woman.

Me neither -one more reason not to trust anyone

Yikes! Agree with everyone else here.

I’d stop going to the group and discuss it with my therapist....

I agree I think I need to stop-

I agree with talking to your own therapist about this - in every way the group T needs to stop practici...

Yep she needs her own therapy

She may need her own therapy, she may need time out of work, she may need to loose her license - in any event if I returned to the group I would be strongly challenging her behaviour, starting with her checking her phone during the group session and going from there.

One messed up T doesn’t mean they all are, it’s a job that can easily get under your skin if you’re not careful, and good Ts seek support from other Ts, not their group clients.
