Hi Everyone, Thank you for allowing me to introduce myself. I am from Sault Ste Marie Ontario, I am 37 years old. I have recently been in an airplane crash and am experiencing my first symptoms of ptsd. I have not as of yet searched for professional help. Just waiting to read what people recommend through their own experiences on which route to go. I hope to learn from you all! Thank you :o)

Hi shellyinthenorth and welcome to the forum. I'm more than gland that you survided the airplane crash. :)

You wrote that you're experiencing the first symptoms of ptsd and also that you're not seeking professional help yet.... So, may I ask who gave you the diagnosis of ptsd?

I have not been diagnosed, I am just looking for some temporary comfort. I know all about self diagnosis is a bad thing, I am not meaning to diagnosis. Just looking for a little empathy and to know that my feelings are not being frowned upon. :)

Welcome Shellinthenorth :)

Gosh, being in a plane crash - I'm glad you survived. Are you okay physically? How long ago did it happen?

What type of symptoms are you having?

I hope you find solace and comfort here.

Drew

I'm sure, people will understand that you're not feeling like dancing after such a severe, life-threatening event. :) But is is also important that you understand, that it can be irritating for others when you say you have PTSD, but as far as you know right now, you don't, according to:
and am experiencing my first symptoms of ptsd.

I would encourage you, to make as soon as possible an appointment with a therapist to do some explicit clarification.

I am sorry that something like that happened to you. I can't imagine what that must have been like. I am glad you are able to be on the forum

I would recommend that you talk to a trauma therapist. If you feel that you are having symptoms talking to a therapist as soon as you can may be able to lessen the affects or even avoid developing PTSD. Not everyone that goes through trauma gets PTSD and a TRAUMA therapist can help you. It is great that you want to know more about PTSD and being on this forum can be a great support but talking to someone with the skills to help you through the initial shock and within the first few months would be the route I would go.

There are a lot of people here that can help you with what you are experiencing and after something like that I expect that it is a lot. There are also a lot of things already posted in old threads that could help. If you do a search for some of what you are experiencing you will most likely find some answers.

I want to add that there are a lot of people here that are undiagnosed, it can take a long time before someone is able to see someone qualified to make a diagnosis. There is nothing wrong with wanting to talk to other trauma victims that can help. I joined this forum a year before I was able to get an appointment with a psychiatrist and be diagnosed. I needed the support I found here.

Please seek help now. Experiencing symptoms after trauma is normal. Getting help now will help ensure that you don't develop PTSD. (Believe me, you really don't want this label!) welcome to the forum.

The quicker you receive treatment the better off you will be.

Wow, a plane crash. I can't even imagine. I am SO sorry you went through that but I am SO grateful you are here today.

Sorry that you had the trauma. I hope you consider sharing what it is like, to be you, right now, feelings welcome.:)

Hi there

As you are in Ontario, try to find a psychologist who works with ptsd victims, privately, or talk to your family doc to see of she he can refer you to the psychologist at your local hospital. Hospital may have a longer wait list depending on local resources, as its ohip covered.

Privately isn't ohip funded bit you may have coverage through your employer. It wont go too far. Ask for recommendations as not all psychologists are the same. I know this also may sound like a cheesy route but many personal injury lawyers have close working relationships with psychologists in your area that deal with accident trauma, they can refer you to. If you are stuck or feel embarrassed as your city may be small, then call Thompson Rogers, a firm out of Toronto, who have really good people who they deal with all over the province. They can give you some names. If your plane accident was work related wsib funding would cover such services.

You may want to ask your family doc about an appt to see a psychiatrist too. The wait list in the province is challenging. Ask if your area is covered by someone who does appointments via telemedicine.

I have ptsd from a mva, that by all accounts I should have not survived.

A few things beginning your journey you need to know.

It is not your fault. Anyone who survives an accident has some element of it. It is "expected" under the circumstances
Everyone's trauma comes out differently
Get a hold of your community crisis line phone number, it would be a 24x7 number. It's good to have when it's 2am. You may never use it, but know its there
Ohip has a chat person 24x7 who can help connect you to people in your area Dead Link Removed and answer questions about services
Remember to breathe :)
