I've been on this forum for some time now and although my partner and I have split up (he suffers with combat PTSD) I have realised that during his intense emdr therapy sessions, I as his only carer (his family are useless and not interested) received no official support or explanation concerning what I should expect from the fall out of his therapy and how to deal with it.

Fortunately I am about to qualify as a mental health nurse so had some insight but had I not had this knowledge and the support of my family, I would have crumbled under the pressure of the anger outbursts I was constantly subjected to towards the end.

My point is, as I will soon be qualified, I am thinking about contacting my local veterans society in Hampshire UK and offering to volunteer to establish a monthly support group for Carers and spouses. It would be very informal and purely a place to vent and seek support and increase knowledge regarding this illness and coping strategies.

Is there anyone on here in the south of the UK who would be interested in this?

Hi PeekieBlue

Your idea sounds great, just be mindful not to use the forum for self promotion even if it is for a volunteer support group.

If members are interested, please then communicate via PC or site mail with the details as, due to you soon becoming qualified, it could be deemed you are using the forum to gain exposure for the monthly group if you are successful in obtaining the platform to establish it.

There is a fine line irrespective of the good you obviously intend so please keep this in mind thank you.

I just read this but was wondering albeit off topic if you had heard of support groups for sufferers in either Hampshire or Kent? Thanks and sorry if this is not welcome here.

Hi Nicolette

Self promotion was completely unintended and hadn't crossed my mind but I can understand where you are coming from so have taken your comments onboard. If anyone replies to the thread I will communicate privately via site email. I trust this is acceptable?

Hello
The only support group for suffers I am aware of in Hampshire is for combat PTSD sufferers. Is this relevant to you?

It's a shame as there seems to be a lack of specific support groups in the UK for PTSD sufferers and Carers :-( I hope you manage to find a group somewhere.

Well I'm actually from South-East Kent, but I seem to be living in two places at the moment, and the other place is in Hampshire and I just wondered if the support was any better here than it was back home or if there was just nothing. Thanks again any way.

Thanks Toria. I could have really done with such a group whilst my ex and I went through our break up whilst he was doing therapy. Maybe if I had had some professional support and advice we may still be together?
