We don't have these events in Australia because we don't have the same level of fear in our media or guns in our homes.
We have the odd shooting in Canada too. Mostly stabbings, though, by drunk kids and adults, people off their meds. The death rate in the city where I live closest too (also the murder capital of Canada last year) was 27 people. For the entire year. Only 4 of those involved guns, and those 4 killings were gang related.
Find me one instance of a shooting where there is not a history of violence and or mental instability
The shooting that just happened, the guy had no criminal record, no run ins with police before. Same with the guy who killed all those students at Virginia Tech, no history of violence. Mental instability sure. Show me a criminal that isn't in some way mentally unstable.
Instead of the saying guns don't kill people, people kill people. It should be:
People kill people, people kill more people faster with guns.
but I also want security companies employed and better gate systems. Stricter pick up/drop off measures and video cameras at all access points.
This sounds more like a jail.
I know that sounds extreme, but I think we're to the point where it is necessary.
The US is to the point that you all might as well lock yourselves up in jail and let the criminals have the rest. Personally I think your society is at the point that it's time to destroy all your personal fire arms.
There is only one reason to ever own a handgun. That's to kill somebody. Target practice isn't an excuse. If you want to do target practice go get an airsoft gun.
How many of you with guns really think you can pull the trigger faster than a criminal that breaks into your house with a gun? And that's assuming you keep it under your pillow. If you own a handgun and keep it locked up for safety, what do you even think the chances are that you're going to get to that safe, unlock it, put your weapon together and load it before the criminal has figured out what you're doing and takes you out first? So, virtually, you don't really have a gun for protection, just a concept of one that's more likely to get you killed than keep you alive. Also, in a stand off keep in mind, he's there to do harm. You would hesitate, he/she would not.
In what situation would you find yourself in that you would be able calmly go and get your handgun to threaten someones life?
