Anxiety Medication For One-off Social Events?

I am currently on Mirtazapine, which has really helped my depressionand insomnia, but my anxiety is still pretty bad' particularly in certain social situations.

My husband is about to graduate from police academy and has a graduation ceremony that myself and my sons are going to. This will involve hundreds of people and trying to manage my kids (one is 3). We have friends coming to help, but even talking with them is difficult.

I really don't think I will cope and I don't want it to be about me and my anxiety issues, I want it to be about my husband.

Are there strong anxiety medications (you can take with strong AD medications), that you can take just as one-offs, when required? And do they make you feel spaced out, or can you function well on them?

Thanks

I would go to your doc and get something for anxiety. It sounds like you have alot of help and support. I think you will do just fine. You have alot of inner strength. You have it in you to do this. Let us know how it turns out ok? Big hugs.

Yes, there certainly are, and given your circumstances I suspect your doctor is likely to be receptive to this. The one thing I would recommend is that you try them first, before the big event, to make sure you can tolerate them ok and so you have an idea of what to expect - that will be one less thing you have to worry about on the day. Like all medications, they affect everyone differently, so I would make sure you'd had a dry run or two, perhaps in another situation which causes you routine anxiety from which you can escape easily if you have a bad reaction.

Thanks Gizmo and Maddog :)

That's what I'm hoping to do - get some on Thursday when I see my doc and try one on the weekend before the graduation the following week. I'll try it out on the Sunday and go to church in the evening - that causes me a lot of anxiety, so it will be a good test.

I hope she'll give me some and not tell me how strong I am and to try to manage my anxiety. I'll have to be pretty honest about how bad my anxiety is getting.

Rum and Ginger!!! (sorry, joke!! feeling crappy and needed to cheer myself up. Please Drink Responsibly).

On a proper note, Propanalol (beta blocker) might be an option.

Good Luck and congratulations for your H.

I have anxiety meds just for when the anxiety is too much. I don't take them all the time however find them useful for similar situations.
