Do any of you have this thing where no matter what you do your sleep pattern always ends up being sleep during the day and awake all night.

For me it really only started since I graduated high school and started uni as an external student. No matter what I do my pattern always ends up awake during night and sleep during day, it was so bad at one point that I would go to sleep as my parents were waking up and I was waking up when they were asleep so I had no other human contact for about one month.

Yeah I have that problem too. The only way I get away from it is by staying up and burning myself out so that I end up waking up at 7:00am or so. But before I know it, my schedule settles back into being awake at night and sleeping during the day. I usually get sleep at about noon to 2pm, and then wake up around midnight.

It is nice to see that somebody else feels this way, enough to write about it. Maybe I will see you on chat huh?

Yeah I have that burn out thing too, where I stay up all day and try to sleep at night but it doesn't work.

Happened a lot to me in my late teens and early 20s. I Kind of grew out of by getting into a routine of getting up early and going to bed early. When I have vacation though I sometimes drop back into the night owl routine. I think it is normal for some people to be early birds and others to be night owls.

Yep, thats one reason why its 3 in the morning here and I am awake. Sometimes it bothers me, but I like the night time. T says one reason ( among many) is that I feel safer at night, and I feel I can get more done. I tend to more creative during night times.

I can really relate. Most of the time I'll get some sleep between 5-8 AM and Noon-4 PM. A lot of bad stuff happened to me at night. I've had insomnia since I was little.

I am sorry to hear. That is really tough. Do you think the insomnia hypervigilance related?

As a child, I had good reasons not to sleep at night, and in fact was actively kept awake and highly alert and vigilant. I think that like so many things, your brain an body actually do change over time to try to adjust to certain behaviours you inflict upon them. As a result, my mind and body believe that sleep is best undertaken during the day, and nights are made for being busy, active and hypervigilant. This would not be such a problem if I didn't work full time during the day...

Currently, for months now, I have averaged between 2-3 hours sleep a night, usually between about 8-11pm. It makes it hard to keep going, yet somehow, except on occasions when it seems to need to collapse through pure exhaustion, my body will not allow me to rest more, no matter how tired it is.

It's a strange, draining existence.

Have any of you tried medication to help re-set your body clock? I have found amitriptyline works really well, when i reached the point of only 2hrs in 24 my psych recommended it. It doesn't knock you out like sleep meds but gives you a deeper sleep, i felt slightly 'off' during the day for a few days when i started taking it, took it for 3mths & havent needed it since. It's well worth a try!
