Hi everyone,

Kind of a random post here, but can anyone reccomend a couch? Do you have a couch that you love and do you know the brand?

So, this does relate to PTSD. I just moved into a new home and bought a couch and now that its here I don't really like it.
It is more on the formal side and some what uncomfortable. It was causing anxiety, so I spent almost an entire therapy session talking about the couch and what it means ect. I grew up poor and so now when I spend money on things I want them to be perfect.

So, after sorting through these feelings and trying to accept the new couch, I realize that I would still like a different, better couch for logical reasons.

Our plan is just to use this one in another room and then take our time to purchase another one for our family room.

I want a couch that you can curl up on and read a good book, that is sturdy and made well, and is comfortable with out looking too saggy or frumpy. Being comfortable in my home is a huge part of managing and lowering symptoms so if any one has any insights that would be great!

Try your Salvation army depot or warehouse or similar. That's where I got mine... it's near new, old fashioned pattern but sooo comfortable. Everyone that sits in it goes aaah what a nice couch lol.... they don't know I only paid $50 for it.

If you find a really comfortable and well made second hand couch - you could always get a new cover put on it, for not much money too. Especially if you didn't want to part with it.

I agree with your specs for your ideal couch. Must be very comfortable for 'those' days... :)

If I had a healthy budget, I would watch for sales and buy a well-recommended couch that might cost a little more. I'm not sure what stores you have nearby, but in my area, Haverty's is a good store with quality furniture. There is also Macy's. I think they decent furniture as well. There are many online stores as well. I guess I'm just oldschool though, I want to testdrive my furniture.

I didn't have a big budget so I settled for a disaster of a couch from Big Lots. Don't go there! It looked cute and sat well in the store, but this one I now have... nope!

Good luck. I know what a pain furniture shopping can be. VB

1. Break out the bubbly!!! :D ...because buying the wrong damn piece of furniture? Is a rite of passage. Unless you inherit all of your furniture, or have to make do with whatever, everyone has a couch-story. Or “The Terrible Chair”. Or “It LOOKS like a bed. Clever torture device to camouflage itself as somewhere to lay down. Bastard.” :shifty:

So if this is the first IT’S WRONG! :bag: piece of furniture you’ve acquired? :sneaky: Crack the champagne. You’ve arrived at a milestone! And should celebrate.

2. My 2 favorite couches were

- RC California (down wrapped kiln dried made to order awesomeness. Although I immediately regretted my fabric choice, and wished I’d had the body done in the velvet I’d ordered the accent pillows in. Dagnabit. Ah well. It’s still amazing, and it’s a couch that will last generations -of football & hockey players crashing into it, and springboarding over the back- , I buy very very sturdy furniture. (My dining room table once had a full drum kit, guitar, and bassist play a set on top of it.) Recovering and eventually restuffing/rewrapping the down, is simply a foregone conclusion. Someday. 15 years old and it still looks new. Despite living in a house full of boys, dogs, cleats, snow gear, musicians, cocktail parties, game days, etc. ) I usually ran the down wrappers and cushion covers through the wash a few times a year, and steam cleaned the body once a year or so, as that doesn’t unzip. Upholstery – rene cazares

- An unnamed whisky brown leather couch I sat in (read melted into and nearly came) at a friend’s flat, and immediately made them an offer on. (Turns out they hated it, and were more than happy to get rid of it, for the cost of a half rack of beer given to the delivery guy if I would get the evil thing out of their home. :inlove: It’s a custom piece but the makers mark is unreadable.). I grew up working in stables, and therefore cleaning tack; so using saddle soap on it periodically takes longer than just unzipping the fabric couch and tossing it in the machine, but I enjoy it.

Whatever couch you choose, I would curl up on it as you say, or however you intend to use it (including for sleeping) for a little while before you buy. (No different than trying beds at the store).

Either that, or it's just me, and I have no shame left. (Though I'd limit hanging my head over, if that was my thing. Or maybe not?? ?? ) But hey, sleep and comfort are priceless commodities. :)

Happy shopping! :)

I am absolutely with you on this ... you’ve just got to have a comfy couch or a very large armchair that you can still tuck your feet /legs up in.
I’m in the uk so its hard to recommend as mine is from a local firm. My friend recently got a lovely comfy couch from Ikea and its one that you can just fall asleep in.

I used to work with furniture. If you can afford it, an older sofa or antique sofa can make the best type of couch as they are sturdy, heavy, and well made...not slapped together at the factory. I also like what everyone else has had to say and hope you can find the right couch for your needs.

Thanks everyone for your couch weigh in.
I wish I could stumble upon the perfect used couch that just has that great spirit.
I agree with @Lionheart777 that an old well made couch is a good thing, I just havent found one.

Well, no. I have bought lots of terrible furniture. I bought a lot of furniture from AFW and one from IKEA. IKEA will actually give me panic attacks when I am in there.

I buy very very sturdy furniture. (My dining room table once had a full drum kit, guitar, and bassist play a set on top of it.)

Can you rec a table? I need that as well.

You are hilarious.

We most likely will go for a couch from Room and Board that is mostly affordable. (1,500 k) compared to other couches. It has the down inside and the kiln dried legs and every thing.
I just need to get the right color. We are leaning towards the navy, but will most likely get a white cat in the future, so I dont know.

Before I get it, I am going to check out used stores, I am just nervous about used couches. I think reapolstering is expensive.

I think reapolstering is expensive.

Reupholstering a used sofa is fairly expensive. It depends on the price of the material you choose to use and labor can run around $300 (plus the cost of material), depending on the upholstering company. I used to do furniture upholstering for a trim shop (we did car interiors too), and I would say that if you had an old, sturdy piece of furniture that it would be worth the money to get it covered but that isn't always affordable for everyone.

So I would then recommend a slipcover. A good rule of thumb is that if it is heavy then it is a good sturdy couch that will last awhile. The lighter ones are made in a factory, where they rush to upholster them and they often use soft pine wood for construction.

I hope this doesn't discourage you. If it were me I would try to find a good used couch and then purchase a slipcover as they can be taken off, washed, and aren't too expensive to replace.

Good luck,
Lion
