it's hell. That's all you really need to know.

Coming from an adult child of a mother with DID.

Single parent household. So she was my only parent. It's hell and still is.

I grew up with my mom who had DID, used to be MPD. Everything in my life was cool (except for my raging alcoholic father, but who didn't have one of those?) until mom had her DID resurface. It would become a huge issue during different times in her life, it seemed liked every decade going back to when she was born in 43, like the 50's', 60's, etc. Well I lived the episode of 1981 - 1985. I was 10 when it all started with her getting a DUI. She then continued to be hospitalized over 40 different times. The longest stay was 37 days, the shortest stay was 3 days. She was hospitalized for a total of 340 odd days during this 5 year period. The repeated abandonment, the multiple exposure I had to her personalities (I have a long list of horror stories I can share) has had quite a toll on me. At 47 my mental health issues seem to be getting worse. Although I myself have a Masters in Counseling and help a lot of people and am really well known, my mom is as well. She has not had an episode in over 10 years that I have had to deal with. She functions very highly and I don't see her ever disassociate anymore. But the damage this has caused in my life is something I still have not been able to overcome. It affects my mental health on a daily basis. I would be interested in talking to anyone for support regarding their parent who had MPD/DID growing up.
