Computer talk

One big fault in Win 7 is it takes so long to start due to disk thrashing. The win10 laptop has an SSD (solid state drive) which makes it start up really fast. That desktop computer upstairs is the "main" computer and it needs an overhaul and some an SSD for the boot sector and windows. I've been saying that a couple years.

I got the Iphone working on Linux which was no small feat mostly because I kept googling how to do it the old way which I did not get to work it required a whole bunch of terminal commands and trying things over and over. I finally got a program/app called Feem that worked. (seems to anyway I'm not familiar with it yet it has good reviews) Linux is different from windows for installing programs and so on. You have to 'look up' lots of stuff.

The iphone thing was even kind of a 'I just have to make this work' thing. Most things are. I don't use my phone like Apple wants you to. (tries to force you to) I never 'sync' my phone with itunes, I use it like an external HDD and manually transfer pics and music back and forth between it and the computers. I always have root access. Otherwise, I would switch phones.

My mom’s desktop just died after 10+ years.

Does anyone have any recommendations on good desk...
No simple answer? It's like a car. It's fine if you never need the company and nothing goes wrong. If you think you will need support be sure to buy from someone who will guarantee you stateside support. Most of the big guys have support (unpaid) offshore. I won't speak with them personally, as most people for whom English as a second language lack the nuance required. It's exasperating enough to have a tech support issue without having to struggle to make yourself understood.

Okay going to pop in here for some advice from the tech savvy.

The power port on my laptop is loose ca...
I agree, new one, they are cheap enough. I admit though I kept my last 2 laptops way beyond when I should have mostly with duct tape and the last one I had to keep tapping the keys to make the screen light up lol. IDK if it was actually the keys or just banging on it. : )

Multi factor identification (is that what it's called?). It's so stupid I can't shut it off (won't) and every time I log into something I have to get up and get the phone. Then there's life lock and my lists of passwords. I'm not very good at filing and organizing I guess.

I'm reluctant to call my friends because I know they will want to charge me for their services now.

I hope your laptop isn't still doing the black screen thing. If this keeps happening at the very least make sure you have a full backup onto an external drive of everything you want to save and do this regularly.

power port on my laptop is loose causing issues with charging the battery

No I don't agree - depending on your make and model - power ports are fairly inexpensive to fix. It is simply one component in the lap top. If it is otherwise working ok I would be calling the local fix it guy and taking the laptop in so he can get the part number or a generic part and popping that back in. Job done for a fraction. But if there are other issues with it that you know about it may be time to upgrade.

Hewlett Packard. HP for short.

HP have a good reputation. My laptop if a Asus. It is a bit freaky how old it is.

I have replaced the hard drive with a SSD (Solid State Drive) but retained Windows 7. It loads relatively fast - have nothing to compare it to really lol, Anyway I'm not doing anything fast these days so it doesn't bother me. :)
