Hi all,
I am 28 years old and have been in therapy for approximately the last three years. I was raised in a cult and unrelated to the cult I was being sexually assaulted by my brother and a neighbor. I attempted suicide at age 11 and when that failed I began self harming. The sexual abuse stopped by the time I was 12 and at age 13 my dad died. At 14 I was well on my way of being groomed to be a leader in the cult. At age 18 I was able to escape from the cult. The family that took me in at that time are people I can call my own and they are very supportive of me and my healing journey.

In the beginning of my search for a therapist that could help me, I was misunderstood and they thought I may have schizophrenia. This was of course not helpful as for the treatment of schizophrenia and PTSD can be quite different.

I am very excited to have come across this forum as I am on a search to find help, connection and healing. I also know that a life of isolation can keep anyone from growth. I want to be a better person, learn how to continue healing and be a productive member of society.

Thanks to Anthony for creating and maintaining this site.:) I look forward to the opportunity this place can give to me. I really am excited.:D

Hi and welcome to the forum. You are very brave and couragous to escape the cult. It is nice to meet you.

Hi BerryFactory,

Welcome to the PTSD Forum! :)

This site is a great place to find information and support as you work on healing. I am sorry that you had such a rough time with your therapist and hope that you have success in finding a therapist that is experienced with PTSD.

Take care.

Debbie

Hello and welcome to the forum. I have found this website to be a great source of support and information.

HI. Welcome to the PTSD Forum. I recommend you look for a therapist who is experienced in debriefing cult members as well as ptsd. Most cults program you and you don't even know it. I don't want to know which cult, but it is vital you get the correct type of help. Other wise, the very things that help most people with ptsd can activate what the programming was designed to stop you from talking about what they were doing.

You will find lots of good information here, and wonderful supportive people.

Thank you to everyone for your warm welcome. Now with the introduction out of the way I can breathe a sigh of relief. :)

It feels a bit scary opening up to others even though this is not face to face. The anonymity of this site helps a lot.

I have come across instances where what you said is true for me. I feel that my therapist has handled this very well and is careful in the way that certain issues are talked about.

I feel very fortunate to have found my therapist and after I lost my insurance she kept me on pro bono. One of my stipulations to continue seeing her is that I maintain a willingness to work hard in my recovery. That seems like a no brainer to me.;)
