I'm new to this forum and spent the first 30 years of my life in a cult. I look forward to hearing others stories and how they have dealt with the issues of life outside the confines of a very religious upbringing

Welcome to the PTSD Forum, Mondernmama. I hope that you will start a diary here and be able to get your feelings out on paper. I can be very healing. Every one here is very supportive, and kind.

It really helps to think positive. I am so sorry you went through what you did. Take good care of you.

Those who use the name of God to do bad things are going to be sorry. But I'm glad you didn't do to others what was done to you.

Nice to meet you,.

You are very brave leaving the cult was great thing to do.I suffered a great deal in my childhood. With the help of a great therapist, I am finding my way to the land of the living. Good luck on your journey. Peace

Modernmama,

I agree with Brad1980. You were very brave to do that. I do hope you have a good trauma therapist who is familiar with ways to break the training you got while inside the cult. The stuff you learned early in life tends to stay with you, and if you were programmed, like I was, to have certain responses of submissiveness, when you are triggered, you will return to that state of mind no matter how old you are.

Just a heads up. It takes a while to be deprogrammed.

Thanks to all of you - what a wonderful forum to be welcomed to. The most helpful thing I've read so far is the "spaciness/disconnected" feeling others have. It certainly feels good that I'm not alone. I have a trauma therapist but have wondered if there are specialists who deal in cult behavior. Safenow - I had to laugh at your submissive remark as that certainly hits home. Thank you
