I see it as a mental disorder. It is a disorder of the way my mind functions.

I think the word that can be most misinterpreted is 'stress', simply because I think people relate the word 'stress' to having work, relationship or money troubles etc. People do suffer from stress and anxiety (I don't wish to minimise it), but in ptsd understanding the way the memory works is what (for me) is most difficult to comprehend and explain to others.

Perhaps Post Traumatisation Disorder would be easier to explain. But I guess these labels are chosen for health professiionals communication.

Hashi, you have a very good point. It is a condition that we suffer with.

Meadowsweet, I agree although I'd never thought about it until I read your post. The 'stress' is a bit ambiguous. As you say, everyone has varying degrees of stress in their day to day lives, but PTSD is caused from something way outside that normal spectrum.

Hmmm... Post Traumatisation Condition?

This is definately getting to be an interesting thread. And yes it is specialists that do chose the term, but if they lend an ear, they may get a clearer message from the sufferers what we're really dealing with. Meadowsweet, I'll be repeating what Ice_Fire said, that the word stress can be ambiguous. Ice_Fire, your term is very interesting.

Injury as well. Stress doesn't seem to be the right word somehow. I second what Gizmo says.

I chose yes, because to me, that's exactly what it is; one heck of an injury. I also think there would be less stigma surrounding it because of its categorization as a "mental illness" if it were named such.

I think there is only professional help for soldiers/firemen/policemen suffering from ptsd. Maybe there should be different terms and realization that in regions of war, civilians also get ptsd.

Leave it as PTSD. If you change it to post traumatic injury then I have the feeling that there will be confusion with traumatic brain injury.

Changing a name won't do much of anything. Why fight hard for a name change when you can fight for REAL change through increased understanding?
