3. The most common vocalization made by gorillas are belches.​

Belches are described by Fossey as, “a deep prolonged rumble rather like a soft belching sound, especially when heard from any distance. It [is] most commonly uttered as a long, di-syllabic, ‘throat-clearing’ type of sound (ummm-ummm) with the second note dropping down from the first”. Belch vocalizations are used to convey a sense of contentment between individuals. It is most often initiated by a silverback, followed by the rest of the group.

Semi kind of makes rethink how disgusting burps are… LOL

And I found out that after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, before the arrival of occupying American forces, the Japanese government set up brothels in order to mitigate rape. They did this in cooperation with the US government. American soldiers were given little pink cards that had the prices of all the bordellos and alliteration of the Japanese sentence, “Where is the bar?”

But then VD’s got so bad that MacArthur outlawed prostitution and rape cases skyrocketed.

ETA: that whole episode was very dark… sorry I didn’t realize how dark it was. It gives a side of WW2 we weren’t allowed to know about. Not a very fun fact.

Carl Sagan’s second wife, Linda Salzman, drew the illustration for a gold plaque fastened to the twin Pioneer spacecrafts. It had an illustration of naked humans, a man and a woman. NASA censored Salzman’s drawing by removing the woman’s genitals but not the man’s. The woman’s genital area is smooth and featureless like a Barbie doll’s. On the man you can see his scrotum and penis.

There is no image of Salzman’s original drawing, leaving us to speculate what feature was omitted. My guess would be the labial crease?

Lots of people complained that NASA was sending porn into space and some even speculated that it might lure hostile aliens to our planet.

I learned a little about Shinto shrines. I knew that the practice was sort of pantheistic, in that there are little gods in everything, but I didn’t realize the extent of it—when they say everything they mean *everything*. Which seems a little overwhelming when I think about it. If there are no boundaries then how is it possible to hold any individual item in reverence?

I do like the idea of gratitude, but I’m confused about how to do it when *everything* has god in it. Is there no devil in Shinto?

My religion, paganism, is actually quite similar, with little gods in everything, and I can handle it okay, maybe because I have personally cobbled it together from legends and fairy tales. But Shinto is real and present.

Anyway, I’m waxing again… I seem to be taking up a lot of space in this thread with my ponderings—didn’t mean to make this a journal entry!

North American football (both 3 and 4 down has a common origin point. A game played between the US Navy an Royal Military Collage on Mount Royal in Montreal was played by 3 down, 12 player, large field (110 yards x 65 yards between end zones) rules for one half, and 4 downs, 11 players on a smaller field (100 yards x 53.3 yards) in the other half.

Canada stuck with the 3 down rules and the US stuck with the 4 down rules.

It depends on the individual.

Every breath of air, to an asthmatic, a new mother waking to see if her child breathes, a drowning person, a person surviving flame, a person scaling mountains… is INFINITELY more powerful than countless every other things.

EVERYTHING has power. To the person it effects.

Only man attempts to grade them. Spirits? Don’t require your allowance of them. They are real. And powerful. And called upon them. To listen & allow.. or not. And to claim.
