Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has suffered from hair loss as a result of PTSD? I'm only 28 and I'm a girl and my hair keeps falling out because I'm so often in a high state of stress. Then I get more stressed because I feel so unattractive with such short, thin hair (it's only just regrowth) and I don't even see myself when I look in the mirror (I used to have really thick, long hair).Anyone else experienced this?Sorry that this is such a shallow thing to talk about in the big scheme of things, but it's really upsetting me.

Hi Nellie. Yes, I experience this from stress too--hair falling out more.

I am a licensed Cosmetologist. We learn a lot about the integumentary system as a science side of hair care. If your hair is thinning when it otherwise used to be thick and you are losing more than the average amount of hair (up to up to 200 strands per day is average), I would suggest paying a visit to your doctor because there are medical reasons for an unusual change.

It can be anything from Telogen Effluvium (stress, medications, after pregnancy, after surgery, weight loss) to thyroid issues. It can even be hormonal, hereditary or due to excessive styling.

I'm sorry. I know this is distressing. (((Nellie)))

If it is due to stress, and we know stress causes inflammation, you need to raise your pH, which indicates your levels of acid among other things.

You can get pH strips at the pharmacy or on-line. You just pee in a cup and dip to see where you are at.

If you are acidic, you can drink or eat things to change your state of inflammation. My go-to is 3 tbs. apple cider vinegar and the juice of one lemon in a glass of water. Add maple syrup and anti-inflammatory spices like ginger and cinnamon to make it more potent.

Or take 1/2 tsp. baking soda and water in a.m. and p.m.

My hair didn't fall out horribly but definitely it did some plus eye lashes.

Drinking the anti-inflammatory drink every day stopped that for me.

It's important to know there isn't organic cause other than stress though so please see a doc.

Either way you will feel better with anti-inflammatory nutrition.

It's not shallow -- I get it. I experienced hair loss after my trauma, but mostly because I wasn't eating. I couldn't eat anything but soup so I dropped about 20 pounds in a short span, something like 1 month or a month and a half. Have you been having any appetite struggles?

Is your cycle normal? (It is a sign of hormonal imbalance..stress can alter that as well/ and "it" can sure escalate stress as well.) I just discovered after 3 years and some research, my hormonal imbalance was and is probably caused or made far worse from smoking cigs. I had no idea and the doctor never once suggested it.. had some hair loss with that to, and yeh it sucks.. (cigs interfere with your bodies ability to work with estrogen effectively- and the treatment would endanger my heart.. time to QUIT.)
