She WAS protecting them, and still is. But, as you said, at a cost to herself.

What do her parents know/believe about the nature of her problems now? If she has a relationship with them, and is struggling, they probably know that she is, or don't they? Have they got any idea what the nature of her problems are?

From what you say about them, I can see where an open discussion might be useful. But, maybe with some kind of supervision? Like maybe if they had this conversation in the presence of her therapist who could guide things a little, if needed?

I've heard that secrets can be harmful too. I guess I'm not far enough along in the "dealing with stuff" process to be real sure of the universal truth of that. What's also harmful is to try to tell the truth and not be heard in any of the various manifestations of that. And that hurts SO much that it's hard to see how disclosing the secret could be worth the cost. But, every situation is different and some things DO work out the way you'd like them too.

I think secrets are harmful but I think the 'healing' part comes from no longer keeping them, if there is someone safe to tell. Not necessarily family or the people who were there or were around however.

I know I am going off at a tangent here, but here in the UK I found it some kind of irony that CSA was the abbreviation used for Child Support Agency ( ie Benefits) when so many of us were already familiar with it for Child Sex Abuse.
