Healthy Coping Skills?

Thank you all for your replies! I find them very informative! To me knowledge alone isn't enough to trigger a lifestyle change, altough i want it badly! At the moment i am cutting it down to tiny actions ( those babysteps), like doing grounding exercises and abdominal breathing exercises. My main goal is start running but i can't do that right now, so i stick with what i can do (in a consistent way)!

Try applying the "P's" Patience, practice, persistence, perseverance, and (optional, prayer)... they've been expanded now to like 10 or 12... but that's where I started. 26-28 days creates a new habit and 6 months a new behavior.

If you want I can provide the enhanced list... but it took me 4 years plus to get the ones above.

Did I do this, yes I surely did... and it has been worth it. Honestly. Worth every moment.

When you are ready... there is a Day Zero Project... 101 goals in 1001 days. For me it was a solid reading on what I could/would be motivated to complete and what I couldn't (where I was/am stuck). I won't say I completed it, I didn't. But I did do half and found it beneficial to spur me on ... away from intellectualization and toward proactivity. If/when you want the expanded list, I can provide it.

I think i have used alcohol and ciggs to numb painfull feelings.

I think for this reason, therapy and finding better coping skills go hand in hand. Though it might feel worse at first, given time, therapy can lessen the burden that you're having to cope with. So in itself that reduces the need for substances. At the same time, reducing substances that have numbed you can increase the need for support dealing with the hidden emotions as it comes up.
