Husband Has PTSD - Neither Off Us Recognise Him

Hannah,

Welcome, glad you found us. Good place, good people. Many blessings to be found here.

I don't know if I can add anything useful or not. But thought I would give it a shot.

I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2000. Have had it as long as I can remember.
I also have a couple of close friends who have it also (one from childhood abuse, one from childhood abuse made worse by combat experience).

I hide. I am always saying I want to be left alone. Most of the time the world feels...abrasive (like steel wool on my skin).

I have very few friends. If people act like they are getting too close I blow them off and shut down. Even my sense of humor is a carefully constructed defense mechanism.

What I don't tell people is that alone sucks. Alone means crying in my room with nothing but a blanket and a razer blade for comfort. Alone means praying to whoever is up there listening to give me the strength to not cut myself this time. Alone is that place in my dreams, where all the demons live and the only sound is the crying. Alone is being so terrified that you don't even have the words to describe it (my vet. friend says all the time "Jack, you would hate me if you knew...")

The truth is that I would sell my soul to have someone around to hold me when the world hurts.

The only thing I can think of that might actually hurt more then PTSD is watching someone you love suffer with it. It is bad enough to feel this way myself. But when I think of the people I love...

You can't fix them but you sure as hell want to. Want to make it better and take away the hurt. Really, all you can do is get info and wait. And be there to hold his hand and hug him when he is ready.

Blessings and Hugs,
Jet

P.S. Don't take off the ring. It will say "I love you" and "for better or for worse" louder then ten phone calls.

Oh Jet - what a gem you really are! your words really touched my heart today. Such compassion and yet suffering so much sadness yourself. My heart goes out to you and please think of the kind deed you have done for me today when you are in your moments of darkness. I'm sure there is someone for you, they say there is someone for each of us!!! take care of yourself and see if you cant swop that blade for something sweeter you deserve it. thanks

I identify with this one....

My husband is wanting a divorce, because he says he wants to "quit hurting everyone he loves" and then in the next weeks after that told me he never loved me... this is so hard and now he says there is no other woman involved, but others tell me there is. He could tell me the sky is "green" and I would believe him, so I don't know what is going on with him really as far as the woman. I try not to even speak to him anymore as we get into an argument everytime we speak, because he sounds so happy and just keeps bringing up the divorce and how he is not going to pay this or that and does not care about me anymore and does not care how I pay bills or how this or that is, I just have to "deal with it". I am tired of "dealing with it". Can I just have me a "time-out" like he is, I guess not... I want to help him, but right now I am so angry and just want to take care of my child and he can do just whatever makes him happy I guess, but just quit telling me how happy he is after we have been married for 17 years and now he says that "I made his skin crawl the last month we were together". How dare him tell me that after we meant so much to each other up until a few months ago. He has always told me I was the love of his life and that I was the best thing that ever happened to him up until then. It is just like he wants to make me hate him or something and I just can't do it, no matter how mean he is to me. I try and try not to talk to him, but then I just can't not talk to him. What is the matter with me? Am I just a glutton for punishment? My friends get so mad at me and say I bring it on and I am sure I do by talking to him. They just tell me to tell him to "kiss off" and be done with him, but he is still the love of my life and I am having trouble letting go.....

Dazed - When I felt like your feeling now- I Quit talking to him...really quit talking - think about it - he expects trouble - and so it happens - you are hoping for a gentle voice and understanding - no- not going to happen... so do yourself a favour and quit or cut back... think about it each time before you speak to him...are you prepared for the backlash and are you strong enough to take it? if you answer yourself no then quit - put it off for another day and another day.

I did and he then shouted that we hadnt spoken for days! but I was stronger and more confident - I have love and support around me - good friends like yours who want the best for you. The ultimate decision is for us only to make and My family will support me whatever I decide but at the moment it is up to him. Don't let him get you down you are responsible for your own emotions heal them first and then you'll see things a lot clearer - promise - self help books were great for me I love reading and I devoured them anything on self esteem - or spiritual enlightment. Sorry if this sounds harsh but it is working for me -

Remember we come into this life alone and we go out alone the people we meet in between all leave footsteps on our heart of some degree... dont let yours be kicked to death.... let it recover for yourself and others I am recovering for me my children my darling mum and then him in that order of priority ..... choose yours

dazed, you were probably right on the money when you said he's trying to make you hate him, this ugly monster makes you want to free everyone around you from yourself and makes you hate yourself so much sometimes. not excusing our behavior in that, but explaining. if you love him, hang in there, he will know, but don't allow yourself to be hurt so--it is not him, but the ptsd that changes you.

Hannah,
I have seen your posts here and there in the forum.... im sure by now you know that time is the only thing you can give, they only thing you can do. Just give it time. Unfortunatly.... Its a scary thing, but try to be patient...
I am the most inpatient person in the world!!!and i still bitch about alot! but i have stuck around (and its been hell) and my hubby and i are doing a bit better now.... we are living together again and i am getting to know him again.... its worth a try, obviously (silver wedding anniversary) Dont see it in such a negative way....he is going through alot, just let him know that you are there for him when he needs you and show him the support he needs.

Trust me... the whole wedding ring thing.... he has alot of problems right now...doesnt mean he doesnt care.. i have learned that. Sometimes they say things that hurt our feelings but we need to understand that they are not ok :(

Hannah,
I am ranger2_75 's wife. LIving with a sufferer of PTSD is difficult. My husband & I have been together for almost 8 yrs. (married 6 yrs). He's a good man with a good heart, that had to do things in the military that our men and women should not have to do. As a result they end up suffering. We need to get ourselves help and find out as much info as possible and let them know we love them...Pain in the butts sometimes they may be, but we can be to them in a different way. If anyone ever said love wasn't easy they knew not what they spoke about, unless they were a spouse of a sufferer or the sufferer themselves. They live it, they suffer it, etc. But we suffer right along with them when we feel so helpless because we can't fix them.
I once told my hubby -- it hurts me so much to watch him suffer -- it was like watching my mom die a slow death from cancer. She lasted 18 months and then rested...our spouses suffer and keep suffering until they get some help and try to work things out, PTSD does NOT have to be terminal.....
It can be delt with like an addiction, on a day to day, sometimes hour by hour basis.

I'm older than my hubby (he's 34 yrs) & I'm (50 yrs), I don't know if that helps or hurts. I don't always mother him by any means. I believe that we have partnership. That to me means we both have to work at things. Sometimes he works, I don't, sometimes we both work, etc. In the end we work together on things that are the most difficult...
no one answer for anything, everything is different, PTSD is difficult because of the many various causes...
hugs to you all, hang in there....
best wishes to all of you and yours....

Andrea

good to hear from you..my hubby (ranger2_75) is on the forum from time to time...

Any time to want to send me a direct e mail give me a holler...
have Anthony send me a message with your e mail or let me know and I will give him my e mail to send to you.

HUGS to you and yours

Living with these special guys isn't easy. But when you love them and know they need us we just have to be there for them...

One of things I know is -- my hubby sometimes in his "other" state of mind doesn't feel he is worthy of being loved because of what he had to do. I just keep telling him, he is loved by me, my daughter, his boys, his sister, his mom & dad. That him being able to help others is a calling of a sort...

Gotta run...

Have a good holiday... Stay safe....

best wishes...
