I woke up screaming last night...

I used to scream in my dreams too............It is not unsuall. It is normal for what you have been through in your therapy process. It is you using your voice at long last to cry out for help. Used to wake my husband up.

This happened to me on my trip several times. I disturbed the house and was incredibly embarrassed. I was triggered by noise I think. It was awful...

I am so sorry :hug: take some deep breaths when that happens and tell yourself your safe; this has happened to me almost every night, sometimes more then once for awhile. Sometimes it eases up. It’s always terrifying. Having your partner there for support can help a ton, having something to drink, some ice water or hot tea can help also. It’s always scary but the important thing when it happens is to take care of you and try to ground, look around and notice where you are. Find 5 objects and note the color, find 4 things you can feel, a smooth blanket etc, 3 things you can hear, and then take some deep breaths :) it’s never easy but with grounding and support it gets easier :hug:

I am sorry that this happened to you! Our subconscious keeps quite busy while we are asleep. I also think that it might be your inner voice crying out to be heard...or maybe your inner child? It could also be a dream that is sorting through your emotions? Is there a situation in your life right now that is causing you fear, whether it's logical or not? Just some thoughts...
Maybe it is something short term that you are working through. I do know quite a few members here suffer from nightmares. This darned PTSD "chases" each one of us in different ways.
You could try doing some positive imagery before you go to sleep, some guided meditation, which can be found on phone apps or on YouTube? Keeping a pen and paper by your bed can be good, so you can write down any words or descriptions of dreams you have.
Sorry to be so long-winded...it's a habit I can't seem to break. :hug:

Thanks @Rosie11 I hope it doesn’t happen again tonight. Last night, after it happened, I just got up and drank some coffee and then after I settled down I fell back to sleep.

Thanks! I actually just got diagnosed with sleep apnea, but I don’t have a cpap yet! I hope that will help!

Rule of thumb :
Nightmares - Whether you remember them, or not; act them out (screaming, fighting, thrashing), or not; you wake up either remembering the fear in the dream, still afraid / still feeling the emotions of the dream, or in an anxiety attack or panic attack.
Night Terrors - You wake up feeling normal or awesome. But everyone else is freaked the hell out, because while you have zero memory of fear/rage OR the dream, whilst sleeping you will have “woken up” and screamed / fought / acted out your dream... and been completely unable to wake. <<< These are named by the terror it causes other people to have someone essentially sleep-walking a nightmare, that they cannot interact with / cannot wake up.

Because half of “what to do” IMO means knowing what’s up.
Okay. So what happened? Nightmare.
What to do about nightmares?
Depends whether you’re wanting to go back to sleep, or not... in my experience. Let’s assume you’re not going back to sleep, as a starting point, since these seem new for you, and that’s a bit of a learned skill.
1. Ground yourself out. Treat it like being triggered. Whatever helps you snap back to reality the best/fastest, and ditch the physiological and emotional response.
2. Screaming ravages your throat. So a little bit o’self care (warm soothing drink, some lemon, some ibuprofen &/or Tylenol/paracetamol, a lozenge, avoid dairy, etc.).
3. Circle of effect. >> Put to rights anything that may have gotten messed up
4. Go about life.
(5) IF this becomes a cycle? Look at ways to moderate the effects, and maaaaaaybe meds.

Hi there Muted thanks for the thread
I used to wake up screaming in full panic with no thought for what it was went on for about 20 years not every night but several nights per week. Scaring the shit out of my wife and our dogs.Then after EMDR it happened only this one time I had a memory there. It was the sudden impact of a motorcycle accident that I had very little memory of. I have not woken like that since. So finding out what was waking me was important.

LOL...I actually just deleted all that info on Sleep Apnea. I thought it was over the top a bit. I guess I should have let it stay. I would almost say for sure that it is the Sleep Apnea causing this. Do you have a machine on the way? It will make a HUGE difference in the way you feel.
