OMG, you guys, this just happened to me the other night!! I was shocked -- shocked!! I had no idea this was going on, but googled it the next morning and found out. Holy shit -- who do they think they are? I feel invaded!! Violated almost. I spent an hour on the phone the next day trying to determine if this was a virus, because I had to upload some text to a website that day for work and worried I would be spreading a virus. Yeah, it's not a virus, but it's almost worse than that, in my book. Jeez, has anyone read 1984?

I'm hearing elsewhere this is the issue.

I don't think mine was turned off. At least I don't think I turned it off. I always would just delay it.

I found some informative articles on ComputerWorld, also Forbes. Do a Google search on Windows 10 automatic upgrade and you'll get a bunch of articles.

Yes, I heard that was the problem. Not turning off automatic updates allowed the Windows 10 update to proceed. (Sneaky, right? Ugh.)

My automatic updates are now off.

I need to fix it so that I no longer get prompted to update to Windows 10.

Not only that, but you have to be even sneakier than them and do something inside your computer, which I don't understand, that won't allow the automatic update. Arrrgghhh. Because I've read that even if you click on "decline" it will still update.

Done wrong and you can mess up your computer.

I have to constantly postpone my IOS updates but at least it doesn't force them on me like with my Android.

My next computer is going to be an Apple product.

I will never have another Android phone.

To the best of my knowledge we had this turned off, as we have them for everything because we don't have time to update when we are on a deadline, so it shouldn't have happened, and it happened and tied up the computer when I had a time sensitive situation going on.

We update manually to avoid such scenarios.

Very sneaky indeed @eveHarrington, because minor updates are one thing, a whole new operating system is another thing.

The linuxes are good - and all of the programs you want are free to install from the various repositories. some of the stricter linuxes like debian are a bit sticky about proprietry software like flash
