Name that distorted cognition (thought/perception)

I tend to disqualify the positive and jump to negative conclusons about the outcomes of events.

I expect that things will go badly and I think this is realy just a form of over-protecting myself from emotional pain, disappointment, betrayal, ie; abuse!!!

I am getting better but still have some work to do.

I remember doing a 12 week course of CBT quite a few years back. It helped hugely with some of the problems I have, really was helpful. Other things I don't think it touched on at a ll but hey.

Anyhow I've noticed the longer it's gotten since I had the CBT, the more some of those problems have come back. And it kinda makes sense to me - I've not been practising the techiniques much if at all since then.

So that has me thinking I should practise them again.

Just seeing your posts saying you're struggling with this again @Ms Spock made me wonder if it might be time for you to do a little revision so to speak. Apologies if it's out of orfer to say that!

Anyhow I like this thread very much and am going to try to challenge distorted cognitions so thanks!

1. All or nothing thinking
I do this in social situations a lot. I don't mind at all if I don't do a task perfectly. But I mind ever such a lot if I don't think a social interaction has gone well

2. Over-generalization
"The pain of rejection is generated almost entirely from over-generalization."
I do this a lot too. If I cook something badly I can easily know every cooking session will not go badly. But - again socially - I take rejection to show I will always be rejected.

3. Mental filter
"A mental filter is when you isolate a negative detail within a situation and then dwell upon it exclusively, thus perceiving the entire situation as negative. Thinking with a mental filter is like wearing glasses that filter out anything positive, thus only negativity is allowed to pass through the lenses to your conscious mind."
Funnily enough I've been having a recurring dream recently - In this dream I regularly take a photo of events that happen throughout my day. And from each photo I chopose the colour that I love the most! Kind of like the opposite of a negative mental filter?!?

4. Disqualifying the positive
Yes, again especially socially

5. Jumping to conclusions - mind reading and fortune telling - yes definately, socially!

6. Magnification and minimization
Magnifying self criticisms and minimising positive attributes

7. Emotional reasoning
This is one that I didn't think I did - but that's not the case - depending on my mood my view of everything changes so dramtically!

8. Should statements
Something I still have a bit of a problem with sometimes for sure, but muost definately less of a problem than it used to be

9. Labeling and mislabeling
Bad self talk!

10. Personalization
"Personalization causes you to feel crippling guilt. You suffer from a paralyzing and burdensome sense of responsibility that forces you to carry the whole world on your shoulders. You have confused influence with control over others. In your role as a teacher, parent, counsellor, physician, salesman, executive, boss, you will certainly influence the people you interact with, but no one could reasonably expect you to control them. What the other person does is ultimately his or her responsibility, not yours."
This a big issue for me. I will feel guilty even where I've had nothing to do with whatever's happened. Also take on far too much responsibility in my mind and it can be crippling!

1. All or nothing thinking
Yes I am here again!

2. Over-generalization
I do this a lot as well.

3. Mental filter
I let one thing ruin a whole experience.

4. Disqualifying the positive
I am skilled at this.

5. Jumping to conclusions
I did less of this

6. Magnification and minimization
I do this a fair bit.

7. Emotional reasoning
I have often done this.

8. Should statements
I do this a lot as well

9. Labeling and mislabeling
Indeed I do this a bit.

10. Personalization
I do that a lot as well.

I am here again.

I really did work hard on my thinking and I have improved a lot but I still have a long way to go.
