As much as I can remember for the last few years (at least) I have not gone one night without either not sleeping at all, waking up numerous times throughout the night, or nightmares.

I'm trying out different things - natural herbal stuff (idea from previous counselor) because of having bad reactions with anything I've been prescribed.
:wall:

I have drank chamomile tea before, but it never helped... the last 3 nights I've drank Stash Chamomile Nights and have managed to sleep through out the night completely (or waking up very shortly because of my phone going off) and no nightmares at all.

Hi there.

I take magnesium and fish oil and they seem to help my anxiety and depression which then helps me sleep.

I am looking to take some alternative to prescribed medication, but am unsure what to take. I wanted to try St John's Wort but understand you shouldn't take it with prescription drugs. I have tried some herbal things like valerian to help me sleep, but it didn't work at all. I have also tried different teas. I like Chai tea, but not sure if it helps much. Magnesium is supposed to be good for muscle recovery, so is supposed to help if you have physical injuries too. I have tried it, but not sure if it did much good or not.

Any other suggestions?

I recently started seeing a naturopath to see if there are any biological disorders that might be hindering or increasing the intensity of my ptsd symptoms.

I ran across some articles by a nutritional psychotherapist and former ptsd sufferer in Australia named Jurriaan Plesman. He is retired now, but he has clinicial studies in his practice of treating ptsd sufferers. He found a common link that they all shared. They all had metabolic disorders. If one would look at the symptoms of metabolic disorders, they are very similar to ptsd symptoms. This is what led me to further investigation. Mr. Plesman believes that every person not only has a psychological personality, but they also have a biological personality. And so in his treatment for ptsd sufferers, he always starts out by treating the biological first, and then the psychological, and he was very successful.

My naturopath did a whole range of tests done, and to my amazement, or not, I do have a metabolic disorder. So, I am being treated for it right now with supplements, homeopathy, proper diet, and juicing high ORAC green veggies.

It will be interesting to me, to see how much better I will get in the coming months. This along with my psych, and chiropractor, which have been engaged already for 1 1/2 years.

If anyone is interested in learning more, you can google Dr. Plesman's name and make your own decision. I personally don't always agree with every little thing he says, but the valid points he does make, I could not ignore...and so far he's right, at least for me. There are various ways and paths to healing. This was the way he found worked the best for him and his patients.

Quiet Life tablets are good, I found them really helpful in reducing the hyper-vigilance and rage. They contain valerian, hops etc.

Hi Tiji

Will check out this dr, sounds interesting.

I have just started a new tea, and so far so good, it is called 'Relaxing Tea'. It contains; Chamomile, Passion Flower, Valerian, Catnip, Scullcap, Strawberry leaves and Peppermint. It is made by 'Red Sea' Natural Health. It even tastes pretty good. I have also decided to try magnesium again, and am taking a magnesium forte.

Hi Clydie.

You will find his articles by googling the 'hypoglycemia association of australia'. There if you feel inclined, you can take a couple of free hypoglycemia tests and see what your score comes out to be. Not everyone has hypoglycemia (although it is highly prevalent). According to Plesman, it could be another biochemical imbalance.

I just remembered, that there was another thing that influenced me greatly. During the same time that I was reading Plesman's articles, I was also frequenting a natural herbs forum. One section was for menopause. I was reading these posts by several different women saying that since the change, and their hormones going all array, they were experiencing feelings of excess irritability and anger.. Some described themselves as former people pleasers and all of a sudden today, they are like brazen women! Even more interesting to me, they reported that for the 1st time in their life ,they seemed to be going through emotions of anger, grief, even fear about things that had happened to them in their childhood, and in the past. I was competely fascinated with this since they were completely fine and ok before the change. In summary, these women were able to decrease their symptoms with taking various menopausal herbs .

So, this just seemed to connect so well to what Dr. Plesman was saying in how we have a biological personality, and this affects our psychological. And it is also, vice versa. Aside from hormones and hypoglycemia, there could be various other biochemical imbalances or metabolic disorders going on (these may have been subtly present before the ptsd, or occurred after). I was even talking to my psych about it yesterday, and he drew these circles on a piece of paper and they were all linked together.. He agreed with what I was explaining to him (not that I needed him to agree with me.. but his validation was very helpful.) So, going on, if you go to your MD and get tested to see if there is anything wrong with you, none of these things will come out in their tests. Mine didn't. I had 7 full blood and urine tests done in 3 years and I am 'normal'... nothing wrong with me. I go to the naturopath on the heels of reading Dr. Plesman's stuff, and and through his tests, it is discovered I do have a metabolic disorder.. and lots of other things (ie. my basal temperature is too low during the day, my PH is too alkaline..etc... Blah..)

If I get better, this will be the miracle..

Take care:smile: Tija

Clydie, plse let me know if you find one! I found mine through the internet, and made the decision when I saw his answer to this person's question below. I could see that he really looked at the whole picture...

Anxiety Disorder

I’m a young man, who’s 33 years old. I have the following symptoms :
  • I feel Tiredness in my whole body
  • I’m absent-minded
  • I tend to forget a lot
  • Easy to get stressed out and emotional
  • Shivering: is similar to the elderly shivering, but in my case
it’s not that obvious, yet I can feel it in my whole body, even my teeth.
I started eating healthy nutritious food such as honey, natural herbals, Nigeria Sativa, bee and stings treatment, but with no apparent curing results. I have been diagnosed with Anxiety Disorder. Does acupuncture or medication help this case?
Thanks a lot and best regards.
E.

Dear Mr. E:
If you have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, there maybe many different treatments that may be helpful. Not any two people are the same and it is important to consider the psychological/emotional issues as well as the biochemical and energetic (acupuncture energy) factors. I try to look at these problems from a wholistic perspective, considering patient history, brain chemistry, lifestyle, diet and nutrition, acupuncture energies, and numerous other factors. It would necessary to have a consultation and examination to get some ideas about where to begin. Often anxiety problems require an appropriate analysis of neurotransmitter and hormonal balance as well as regulation of blood sugar disturbances and other dietary factors. There may also be other factors such as sympathetic nervous system dysfunction, heavy metal toxins or a multitude of other factors. Treatment may include dietary changes, detoxification and herbal, vitamin, amino acid, hormonal or neurotransmitter supplementations. Structural injuries especially head injuries may have a significant impact on nervous system function.

Hi Tija,
If it's possible to reply back to that young man (age 33) that is exhibiting memory, stress, tiredness, and shivering symptoms, you may want to pass along a gentle warning to talk to his general physician and get his thyroid checked. At his age, the shivering is a dead give-away for a thyroid issue.

I'd check thyroid levels before checking out herbs.

Hi, QuietNow.

That Q & A is on my Naturopath's website, which I cut and pasted.. I believe it is old, archived stuff, so I would hope that guy, whoever, he was, has recovered!

Yes, you are right, his symptoms could very well be because of an under or overfunctioning thyroid, and this is categorized as hormonal/ metabolic. Like most people (and me in the beginning) he was trying to treat himself. I'm guessing, probably, to save money. Unfortunately, a lot of it is like stabbing in the dark, because while one product might be good for one person, it can be toxic or ineffective for another person. I see this all the time when my Naturopath is muscle testing me. My body is very selective in what it wants, and what it doesn't like. For example, currently, it doesn't like any of the neurotransmitters, but instead wants to go with more general stuff.. I find it very fascinating .

It is too bad that those thyroid tests our MD's give us are ineffective, because even slight disturbances can put one off. Tests don't show this. I just feel so very thankful that I am able to go see this Naturopath, with my family's support, to be able to get further to the root of this ptsd matter. The tests he's done so far have been very revealing and valuable. I am feeling a bit better already, but no testimonial yet ! It's only been about 1 month!

On a side note, am really glad to read you are seeing an Obudsman. My very best to you  and keep me/us posted!

Take Care:smile: Tija

I checked out Plesman, I can relate to some of his ideas. I actually think I found his son's writings, at least the last name was the same. Thanks for the tip.
