Profanity And Key Words

Interesting. I wholeheartedly confess that I am a terribly foul-mouthed person in a whole range of contexts, thanks largely to my having been raised in the country and gone on to work in law enforcement. I usually shy rejectingly away from such stereotypes, but quite frankly, on both counts, they're true.

That said, foul language for me is also very much a feature of conversation and language generally and is almost never meant aggressively or critically. Perhaps oddly, I find that when I am actually angry or being critical, I tend to swear less than in normal relaxed conversation. Go figure.

I am also very contextual with my language, quite unconsciously. With certain people and in certain contexts I swear often and almost without awareness, and yet am not even tempted to do so when in other company. I guess they call it contextual learning... or perhaps they just call it an excuse!

I tend to draw a line between swearwords and profanity. Cursing was basically standard communicating doctrine in EMS and there was no real heat behind any of it. My personal estimation was we were all tired of using the medical jargon all day so swearing was a relaxing dumb-down in our speech.
