Sleeping With Ear Plugs

I've considered this, but I don't feel safe with all sound blocked out. I live on a busy intersection and it's really affecting my sleep quality, but I don't like the idea if there was an emergency (or even my alarm clock going off) where I needed to wake up, that I wouldn't be able to. Do any of you find this to be a problem?

Not being able to hear when I sleep would scare the shit out of me. Not necessarily the emergency part, though that's a good point too, but the not being able to hear an attacker... no thanks.. I'd definately rather wake up to stupid sounds than miss that one.

Sorry, didn't realise that was the timing on that. that must have been extremely hard. My husband's father also did much the same thing after his marriage break-up.

I do night shifts and kept getting woken up when my foam earplugs fell out. I got some Zenplugs earplugs which are moulded to your ears so they don't keep falling out.

Im so glad I found this thread, it seems so obvious to use ear plugs but I never thought of trying it...my sleep is becoming a problem just lately because of an unfortunate trigger from the other day..

the thing is about three years ago I moved from the house in the village that I grew up in and I came to live in the city with my mum. My time in that house back in that village was happy for the most part but the last five years were made hellish by next door neighbours who started banging on the walls, this escalated and became full blown anti-social behaviour, her husband got out of prison and it got worse to the point where the police got involved and investigated it and it turned out it was racially motivated and that they had done it before to another family. Anyway..that's in the past now but it affected our lives and my mum and I stopped having visitors and isolated ourselves, I left college and everything went down hill..it was very clever organised crime that became sinister involving intimidation and stalking.

We moved to the city to a nice appartment..my sleep was fine and eventually I settled down.

We then moved again to a nicer area in the city and the neighbours upstairs here who live above us tend to be quite heavy footed my friends who have visited have commented on how loud they are. They started hammering the other day and my mum made a very strange comment, saying that those neighbours from that village from years ago had probably paid them upstairs (!) to cause nuisance and to be 'loud' on purpose..the comment freaked me out and of course is illogical and is as paranoid as you could possibly get. She apologised and I tried to forget it but every single time a floorboard above my head creaks or the neighbours upstairs slam a door, Im on edge and Im brought right back to the events of years berore in that house, which I know makes no sense..for the past three days I have been jumping at every noise and I haven't had any sleep. I have PTSD from other things relating to my abusive father but this has added to it..I hate giving in to stupid triggers and cant help feeling my mum was tactless and seriously should not have said that plus it made no sense so I shouldn't take it seriously anyway.

Im putting earplugs at the top of my shopping list that's for sure!

I sleep with ear plugs, but not every night; only when my anxiety level is so high that the ambient noises of the night are too much to bear. Ok, that's about four out of seven nights. But, I do find they help quite a bit, and wish I'd discovered them years ago. I also have my "own" room now. My husband (the good one) snores like a freight train, and an old neck injury has become a problem for me, so I moved from the waterbed and into the guest room about a month ago. I can eat crackers in bed, now... :D
