Stopped Watching Tv

I know this is the most impressive thing in the section of the forum but several weeks ago this seemed impossible for me. I've struggled with this for years. My actual goal was to stop watching tv on the internet but I dont have a tv otherwise.

For some reason it suddenly feels stupid and doesn't appeal to me at all. Whereas not so long ago I needed it to distract myself or just used it to procrastinate. I would watch whole series at a time.

All I did was to confront myself about how stupid most tv is, and how I don't want to do it anymore. Suddenly I didn't even want to watch it anymore.

It's so strange that a difficult habbit was just instantly very easy to break.

Part of it was, I got sick of just how contrived it was. The characters are all promiscuous, and there is a lot of gratuitous sex on tv, it doesn't have to be integral to the plot to keep the plot going. Characters commit about ten murders a week and get away with it. The way that the hook you into watching more episodes is byshowing you a gruesome deformed body.

I would agree it was a sensory overload. But it was also sending bad messages and I just got fed up.

Cool, good for you! I think most t.v. is sh*t for our brains. I haven't had a t.v. for years...but I did get hulu for my tablet last year and appreciate stuff like "So You Think You Can Dance". My problem is sitting almost always creates pain, so I'm working on new ways to decompress...walking, any exercise on my back (pilates), and I should get a tall bistro table for my laptop so I can stand and blog, edit photos, check this forum, etc. Without t.v. we are forced to get creative in moments of boredom. Like I tell my students, jokingly, "I bet none of you will get to the end of your life, in old age, and look back at your life and say with great feelings, 'Wow, I really watched a lot of great shows'."

Good god, what were you watching?! Anywho, congratulations, I doubt I'll ever feel that way because I'm too much of a geek. Though I can see the advantages to giving it, I'm always surprised how much I don't really miss it when I've been without electricity/Internet though I am glad to have it back afterwards, I find balance is best for me. Enjoy your new found freedom and time, are you going to fill it with hobbies or more serious stuff?

I try to watch wholesome movies etc on tv. I went without a tv for a year and got really creative in finding things to do with my time. I find tv relaxing and sometimes take naps while watching it. I like white noise in the background.

But I refuse to watch the bad stuff and that includes the news programs.

I agree that there is a lot on tv that is not wholesome.

I even watch the kid shows my granddaughters watch. I love comedies.

Good for you on abstaining from tv.
