Ah, a fellow Canadian!

Yes, I think it must be. Our neighbours to the south seem to have big parties every winter where everyone gathers around the biggest bowl they can find, with all the snacks thrown in helter-skelter. I think there's a TV involved somewhere in the tradition, but I'm not sure where exactly.
