How does this keep happening? Why are our kids killing each other? I'm surprised what a huge trigger this is for me --- and I'm not sure why.
We had a class once put on by the fbi about calls involving social media and school shootings. The most surprising thing was when they did their interviews afterwards they found out that most of the students knew something was going to happen. (they didn't believe it but they had heard the rumors). Plus, it was amazing how many shooters had actually posted their plan on social media the day or so before they did it. Did they want someone to stop them? Did they want to brag? Who knows.
The FBI started a nationwide info campaign several years ago at the schools to get students to tell someone if they heard rumors or saw something on social media about threats and the result was amazing. LE was able to stop multiple threats because of students telling a teacher, cop or trusted adult - who would then call 911.
Maybe this is why it's bothering me? I took a couple bomb and shooting threat calls against schools that ended up being credible and we were able to catch the kid before it happened. We caught one kid with blueprints to both the school and the local police department and plans on how he was going to shoot up one, bomb the other and shoot EMS as they arrived. And these were kids. just teenagers. And yet they were planning mass murders of the children in my neighborhood and the cops I worked with.
Is it upsetting me because I know this is how it works? Or maybe the inevitable backlash against emergency services no matter what happens? If we catch it ahead of time we are being unfair to a kid who is venting, if we miss it then it's us not doing our job?
I guess I have a new topic for therapy. Crap.
